Nanobots

As part of Kryten's self-repair system, the sub-atomic nanobots are capable of travelling though his body and fixing any damage the mechanoid suffers. However, after three-million years they tired of his body and fled to explore Red Dwarf.

Having fixed Holly's core program and reconstructed Red Dwarf into a small planetoid beset by electric storms, the nanobots fled with a nanobotic Red Dwarf, leaving a vapour trail behind them. When they found themselves on the verge of capture by the Starbug crew, the nanos hit the brakes and hid inside Lister's dirty laundry basket.

Forced to rebuild Lister's missing arm - as well as the Red Dwarf ship - the nanos elected to play one final joke. They scaled Lister's body and the Dwarf well out of proportion and then fled to avoid the inevitable chaos that would follow.

However, Holly took the nanobot idea one step further in his continuing attempt to keep Lister sane, he created a second load of the sub-atomic robots and had them rebuild the ship's entire original crew (minus Lister and the Cat - but unfortunately including Rimmer).

Operational notes: I'm not very good at this 'keeping Dave sane' lark am I. Still, you can't fault me for effort.
