The mechanoid designer responsible for the 4000 series, Mamet was jilted at the altar by her fiancée, John Warburton. She created the droids in his image to mock him - irascible, mother-hen-clucking buffoons with ridiculous faces. (Note: Quite why she was attracted to Warburton in the first place remains a mystery.) The series 4000, including Kryten, are programmed to obey her at any cost.
