Dr Johnston obtained BSc and MSc degrees in Physics from Simon Fraser University in Canada, and his PhD in History & Philosophy of Science from the University of Leeds. He worked as an instrument physicist and technical manager at Canadian and British firms, and has had temporary posts at a national optics laboratory, a satellite image analysis centre and a cyclotron facility. One of his instruments was designed for the Space Shuttle; another comprises a measurement network that observes the aurora borealis in the Canadian arctic. Johnston taught physics, and the history and philosophy of science and technology, at the University of Leeds, and was a research historian at the University of York.

Dr Johnston has published some two dozen papers, book chapters, encyclopaedia articles and translations on these subjects and on applied physics. He has also written three books: Fourier Transform Infrared: A Constantly Evolving Technology, Scaling Up, and Science in The Shadows: A History of Light and Colour Measurement.
