Okay Dwarfers here's my problem that has been running around my head for yonks.
In Future Echoes, Rimmer mentions that you can't change the future and it already has happened (presumably in a different universe) but then again in Tikka to Ride, they change what happens and everything is affected.

Please tell me if i'm barking or if i'm taking this a step too far. And be gentle, it's my first Topic :-):-)

Another thing to add to the list of continuity errors in Red Dwarf!

I've never seen one before, no-one has, but I'm guessing it's a white hole.

It's not really an error. Sure they change the rules for the particular story but that's not really the same thing. if it were an error it would be unintentional.

If you want to work out a universal rule for all the series, I notice thatthe episodes where they find out their future but don't actually travel through time(Future Echoes and Cassandra) they can't change the future. Other episodes like Timeslides, and Tikka involved them entering the past. The fact they're in a place out of their time maybe the rules change, possibly due to entering a place they weren't alread (depending on what view of time travel you follow.)

Of course there are other episodes like The Inquisitor and Out of Time which are sort of in between the two in that they are mainly affected by other people manipulating time, but again someone is still travelling out of their own present. (If that makes sense.)

Yeah, I know, I'm talking rubbish...;-)

also In tikka to ride (this has probably been mentioned before) If they change they future by going back to the past and stopping the kennedy being killed and then somehow put it right fair enough, thats easy to digest. What I dont get is how can a future person go back in time and kill themselves, Its a paradox sort of thing, but backwards, If they are dead in the past then they cant be alive in the future to go back and kill themself in the past........:?

they do alter it but in the same way it was changed in time slides at the end they put things back as they were more or less. so they never really altered anything

Future Echoes is a bit of a funny episode anyway, the temporal mechanics in Tikka to Ride make more sense to me

Well, in a nutshell, because the future crew destroyed the ship with the time drive in it, then that meant that they wouldn't be able to travel back in yime and kill themselves in the first place.

No, he's explaining the speech Lister made at the start of Tikka to Ride explaining how they got back after the events of Out of Time.

    Well in part.

He left out the bit about them being reset to before they met their future selves and the new universe being spawned to deal with the paradox with elements of both time lines (i.e. hence Starbug is know longer destroyed but it is damaged.)
