I have recently found a bit of the original BBC special effects model that was binned after JMC Red Dwarf fell off its shelf.
I was working for the BBC when I stumbled over the remains of the Red Dwarf Model in a dustbin....I grabbed a section of it as a keepsake.
Anyhow I uncovered it the other day and wondered what it would be worth....its even seen on the remastered ship intro:

Difficult this, because I don't think that's from the original ship!

That looks a lot like the 'bridge', which was a new addition for the remstered version of the model. It appears on the top of the vessel and gets a fair number of establisher close-ups to suggest the Drive Room is located there. (It's also visible in the Re-Dwarf documentary on the live-action model.) I believe there's still a bridge attached to the model that's in Grant Naylor's storage, so this might be a discarded sculpt or intended to be a close-up duplicate or something.

Looking at the FX reel for Series I, I can't find a part of the ship that looks like that. And it can't be from the unseen side because that side was never painted. I also took a look at Series V's reel. The Red Dwarf ship shown in that series was a smaller rebuild. It was blown up and the pieces junked. Some of those were definitely kept by staffers of the time and have subsequently shown up on eBay. But, again, I can't see a section that looks like that.

So it begins, I guess, with the question of when you retrieved this piece, when you were at BBC Vis-FX. The original ship was junked in around 1989/90, the rebuild was blown up in late 1992, and the remastered ship was built in 1996.

My bet is firmly placed on it being from the latter.

    Not really.

Since it's the remastered ship, and not ever used on-screen (even if it hadn't been replaced with CGI, the piece you have is a duplicate) it's probably not going to go for much. But it is at least an 'iconic' bit, which may count for something.

Best bet may be to get advice from the Prop Store, since they know the RD memorabilia market best. (Though they're not obliged to help you make a profit.) But whoever you talk to - or indeed sell to - you would need to provide them with full information, detail the provenance and use. Don't guess!

If the dustbin he fished it out of brings him up on charges you might have something there...

How much are you going to charge for that? I must admit I'm interested.

I always assumed that if you find something in a bin then it is fair game.
