I reckon in real life Lister would simply go mad, or extremely eccentric at least. It's simply too grim for him not to. The cat, with is indifferent self interest, and rimmer and kryten, simply couldn't keep him sane and entertained enough. does anyone agree with me that the thought of never seeing his home, or family or friends, or even being able to 'go out' as such, who do for him

I think he'd wish he had a TV crew around to make a documentary about his hilarious life and adventures.

I think he would be less likely to go mad as time went on. At first, on learning his predicament, yes I think he would have been traumatised (remember that bit in the first book where he walks round aimlessly, drinking whisky and talking to himself? That was when he thought he was truly alone though).

You can get used to most things - and I'd argue that over the years Red Dwarf has become his home, and the Cat, Kryten and even Rimmer have become his friends/family. And searching for the love of his life gives him a purpose and a reason to be hopeful for the future. Also, he has loads of thrilling adventures along the way - even if they're fairly infrequent, it's still more excitement than most of us get in a lifetime :-)

What's not to like is a lack of womanly love, a crushing inevitability of no redemption from the situation, a basic lack of human kind, the claustrophobia of space life, endless time to ponder it all. The lack of sex or female contact, the missing if fellow family members, and a lot of other things. These things also get worse with time not better. Why do you think partners pine away and lose the will to love at the loss of another over a period of time?

Well he's not completely lost Kochanski yet, so he's not quite at the pining stage. In the meantime I assume he still has use of the AR machine - or he can go for runs... ;-)

He'd lose it plain and simple. Bound to in such a situation. I've lived on my own before. I know what it's like

Different people respond differently to isolation. While we could debate how Lister would react, it doesn't mean everyone would or should react in the same way. All throughout history there have been people who have had the opportunity to be part of society and actively chosen to be alone and celibate. Not everyone wants sex or socialising to the same extent.

Lister doesn't have to go to work. He can go to bed when he feels like it and wake up when he feels like it. Endless free food of seemingly any description, including curry and lager. A seemingly endless film library. Maybe he feels things are a bit pointless, but being a Third Technician was pointless too, at least there's no bosses getting on his tits. He's on holiday.
