    Hello everyone,

I dimly remember doing this once before, but all the new episodes have quite a lot of votes now, so it seems like a good time to do it again as a discussion point.

    Series 11 7.87
    Series 7 7.64
    Series 8 7.48
    Series 9 6.63

Strong performance for 10 and very respectable for 11!

I must say, I'm gratified the IMDB scores agree with my position (not widespread on the forum) that 10 was the better of the two. But it's all a matter of personal taste.

Any big surprises? Any complete non-surprises?

IMDb ratings for episodes of my favourite TV shows often surprise me, and there's quite a few surprises in this Red Dwarf list. Perhaps with the IMDb ratings we're getting more of the casual fans' taste than that of us major fans. Backwards being at number 6 is the biggest surprise. I'm guessing that all that backwards film, which I find dated and gimmicky, really appeals to the more casual fans. Justice and, especially, Rimmerworld are another couple of mediocre episodes that I'd expect to be much lower. I'd have expected Rimmerworld to be in the bottom ten or just above.

The rest of the episodes are where I'd expect them to be. It's also interesting but not surprising to see that the Back to Earth trilogy occupies three out of the four bottom slots.

Disgusting that Back to Earth is so low down. Probably the same "edgy" bores who complain about the shape of the Red Dwarf ship

The big surprise for me was the poor performance of series 1 - worst of the "Golden Age", according to IMDB.

I can understand casual fandom focussing on series 4-6... but why, in that case - at the risk of sounding like an Exponoid - would 2 beat 4 and 6?

To me, The End feels like a flawed-yet-promising pilot. But I'm especially fond of the old "Series 1, Byte 2" (i.e., eps 4-6).

Why so? From the discussions on the forum at the time it was clear that literally nobody loved Back to Earth. Around half of the people here thought it was at most quite good while the other half utterly hated it.

Also, Trojan's peculiarly high standing passed me by on my first look. 13th position is far too high for this episode.

There are really unequal numbers of votes for episodes. Around 300 - 400 old series, around 1000 for BtE and only 100 for XI.

So if half liked and half disliked it should be in the middle.

How could Dear Dave possibly be just as good as Samsara & Krysis? (I'd imagine popular opinion will agree on this point with me more about Krysis than Samsara)

Liked but not loved, so I'd say that few people were giving it very high scores, but plenty were rating it a 1 or 2.

There is quite a lot of diversity. Here are the average numbers of votes per episode, for each series:

    Series 1: 421.33 votes
    Series 2: 356.33 votes
    Series 3: 360 votes
    Series 4: 314.33 votes
    Series 5: 348.17 votes
    Series 6: 318 votes
    Series 7: 276.75 votes
    Series 8: 259.25 votes
    Series 9: 662 votes
    Series 10: 310 votes
    Series 11: 175.5 votes

The least reviewed episode is Can of Worms, with 115 ratings. However, 115 votes is still a lot. I'd be surprised if the score changes much, once a hundred votes have been reached.

It's weird, that for me is diffrence to make review for an old episode and currently broadcast episode. I wrote long reviews for series XI episodes, but for the old ones, I wrote just few words. It's hard for me to deeply write about something, that's cult classic and I know, not many people will read my review, instead of new episodes, when lot of people can discuss their own opinion with me.

I'm exactly the same :-) I'd rather be discussing the new stuff because there's much more to discuss. I'm still deciding, in my own mind, how I feel about RD XI. I could write about Twentica all afternoon. Balance of Power? Not so much.

When I write about a new episode, my opinion takes shape as I write. So it's quite interesting (for me) to see what I end up with. But there wouldn't be any surprises if I made myself review Backwards or Holoship.

When I first sat down and watched Red Dwarf as a kid, I fully accepted any episode without question. I legitimately didn't understand how Series VIII was even a different style from the earlier episodes. Even now, despite the massive issues I now have with the writing of VIII, I still enjoy it much more when I actually watch it than I would expect from my opinion on it. It's still part of the original Red Dwarf to me, it's cemented in my mind in a way that even my critical adult mind cannot dislodge.

On the other hand, all my first viewings of new episodes are with that critical adult mind. I'm eager to analyze episodes after I first see them. It's not enough for me to simply like an episode any more, I want to articulate exactly what I like about it and why, and also how I think it could be better. I get as much out of analyzing Red Dwarf I don't like as I do episodes I loved. That's the difference between people like us, and people who will just accept anything playing on TV as long as it kills half an hour.

Even outside of just being a big fan, I truly want to write for a living. Red Dwarf is the show that taught me how important three dimensional characters are in comedy. There are shows I treat as light entertainment where I'm fine just shutting off my mind and accepting whatever it shows me, but Red Dwarf's not one of them. I hold it to a higher standard because it deserves to be. I don't like the kinds of fans who always say their favorite episode is "all of them" and get really angry when somebody criticizes the show in any way. If I didn't like Red Dwarf as much as I do, I would never criticize it because I wouldn't care enough to. If I criticize the show it's because I don't think it's living up to its standard of quality.

I'm just glad that I generally really like the Dave era. Even at its shakiest, I feel the positive aspects still outweigh the negatives. Even Dear Dave, which is not an episode I'd randomly decide to put on, but not one I'd feel a need to skip either. To me as long as the characters genuinely feel like the characters I love, that counts for a lot. It's the lack of that quality, like in much of Series VIII, that really starts to lose me.

I agree with this so much I could have written it myself. That's exactly my experience of Red Dwarf.

It makes it hard for me to do a fair comparison between (say) Emohawk and Can of Worms. I'm more aware that someone wrote it now. I'm not a child. I have my own opinions on storytelling.

At least when I'm (slightly) disappointed, there's more to say on the forum!

I guess I'm the only one who's surprised how far down the list Twentica is?!

I do remember Twentica getting a mixed reaction on the forum when it first aired, so I know it's not the most popular of episodes, but the way it's ended up tenth from bottom on the IMDb list is bizarre. For me, it was season XI's standout episode and the long-awaiting return to the Red Dwarf of old. But I still think the biggest shock on there is Backwards making number 6 (five positions higher than its fellow season 3 episode Marooned and four positions above Gunmen of the Apocalypse).

I think I'll never understand the weirdness of IMDb episode ratings - such as the Game of Thrones episode list having three season 6 episodes in its all time top five while also having three season 6 episodes in its all time bottom five.

I wasn't mad keen, tbh. It was one of my least favourite episodes of Dave-era Dwarf, although I enjoyed some of the scenes in the speakeasy.

Here's a new view on the data. Is anyone surprised by how the episodes are ranked within each series?

    Series One

    1.2 Future Echoes: 8.2 (451 votes)
    1.6 Me²: 8.2 (382 votes)
    1.1 The End: 8.1 (515 votes)
    1.3 Balance of Power: 7.8 (403 votes)
    1.4 Waiting for God: 7.8 (378 votes)
    1.5 Confidence & Paranoia: 7.8 (399 votes)

Personal verdict: very surprised. Confidence & Paranoia and Waiting for God are my two faves from series one!

    Series Two

    2.5 Queeg: 8.8 (368 votes)
    2.2 Better Than Life: 8.6 (378 votes)
2.3 Thanks for the Memory: 8.5 (342 votes)
    2.4 Stasis Leak: 8.4 (333 votes)
    2.1 Kryten: 8.2 (366 votes)
    2.6 Parallel Universe: 8.2 (351 votes)

Personal verdict: mildly surprised. The reveal from Queeg is one of the all-time classic payoffs - but Thanks for the Memory is right up there, among my favourite ever episodes (I might put Queeg second for the series). I think Parallel Universe and Kryten are where they belong, but would have Better Than Life at the top of the relegation zone.

    Series Three

    3.3 Polymorph: 8.9 (384 votes)
    3.1 Backwards: 8.7 (429 votes)
    3.2 Marooned: 8.6 (369 votes)
    3.5 Timeslides: 8.3 (332 votes)
    3.6 The Last Day: 8.3 (323 votes)
    3.4 Bodyswap: 8.1 (323 votes)

Personal verdict: mildly surprised. I can see why Polymorph and even Backwards are popular, but I regard Marooned as one of the heavyweights of the Grant/Naylor era.

    Series Four

    4.4 White Hole: 8.7 (312 votes)
    4.5 Dimension Jump: 8.7 (316 votes)
    4.3 Justice: 8.6 (309 votes)
    4.2 DNA: 8.3 (314 votes)
    4.6 Meltdown: 8.2 (318 votes)
    4.1 Camille: 7.8 (317 votes)

Personal verdict: mildly surprised. I would put Dimension Jump at the top. I'm also surprised to see Camille at the bottom, and baffled (as always) that Meltdown doesn't get more love. I need to rewatch this series, because it's the one I've seen least.

    Series Five

    5.6 Back to Reality: 9.2 (441 votes)
    5.4 Quarantine: 9.1 (391 votes)
    5.1 Holoship: 8.4 (321 votes)
    5.2 The Inquisitor: 8.3 (324 votes)
    5.3 Terrorform: 8.2 (305 votes)
    5.5 Demons & Angels: 8.2 (307 votes)

Personal verdict: not really surprised. Hard to argue with the top two, although I would have liked to see Holoship have a closer score (it's a personal fave). This is a very strong series, and I suppose they have to go in some order.

    Series Six

    6.2 Legion: 8.9 (339 votes)
6.3 Gunmen of the Apocalypse: 8.6 (374 votes)
    6.5 Rimmerworld: 8.5 (300 votes)
    6.6 Out of Time: 8.5 (299 votes)
    6.1 Psirens: 8.2 (311 votes)
    6.4 Emohawk: Polymorph II: 7.9 (285 votes)

Personal verdict: not really surprised. I would probably swap the order of the bottom two, but I think they are the bottom two. Also, I'd bump Out of Time to second place - but I guess it's penalised for the cliffhanger...?

    Series Seven

    7.2 Stoke Mr a Clipper: 8.3 (316 votes)
    7.1 Tikka to Ride: 8.2 (323 votes)
    7.5 Blue: 7.7 (266 votes)
    7.3 Ouroborous: 7.6 (273 votes)
    7.7 Epideme: 7.6 (254 votes)
    7.8 Nanarchy: 7.4 (248 votes)
    7.4 Duct Soup: 7.2 (268 votes)
    7.6 Beyond a Joke: 7.1 (266 votes)

Personal verdict: mildly surprised. It's roughly the right shape - I'd maybe swap a couple of adjacent ones, here and there - with the exception of Blue, which I'd put several places lower. Admittedly, the Rimmer Experience is superb, and maybe that's what people remember?

    Series Eight

    8.4 Cassandra: 8.1 (268 votes)
8.1 Back in the Red: Part 1: 7.6 (259 votes)
8.2 Back in the Red: Part 2: 7.6 (247 votes)
    8.5 Krytie TV: 7.6 (308 votes)
    8.8 Only the Good…: 7.5 (258 votes)
8.3 Back in the Red: Part 3: 7.4 (250 votes)
    8.6 Pete: Part 1: 7.1 (243 votes)
    8.7 Pete: Part 2: 6.9 (241 votes)

Personal verdict: not really surprised. Cassandra is where it belongs, at the top. I remember enjoying Back in the Red (before I realised the crew were a permanent fixture, lol) and think the three instalments should go together. Other than that, this is about right.

    Series Nine

    9.3 Back to Earth: Part 3: 6.9 (422 votes)
    9.1 Back to Earth: Part 1: 6.5 (1133 votes)
    9.2 Back to Earth: Part 2: 6.5 (431 votes)

Personal verdict: meh. Seems a bit weird to rate them as individual episodes. FWIW, on first watch, this was exactly my order of enjoyment. But I've come to appreciate episode two on repeat viewings (the first time round, I think I was too nervous about the fourth wall-breaking).

    Series Ten

    10.1 Trojan: 8.5 (551 votes)
    10.2 Fathers & Suns: 8.3 (319 votes)
    10.3 Lemons: 8.3 (294 votes)
    10.6 The Beginning: 8.3 (241 votes)
    10.4 Entangled: 7.9 (231 votes)
    10.5 Dear Dave: 7.9 (224 votes)

    Personal verdict: complete agreement.

    Series Eleven

    11.3 Give and Take: 8 (180 votes)
    11.4 Officer Rimmer: 8 (163 votes)
    11.2 Samsara: 7.9 (203 votes)
    11.5 Krysis: 7.9 (136 votes)
    11.6 Can of Worms: 7.9 (115 votes)
    11.1 Twentica: 7.5 (256 votes)

Personal verdict: not really surprised. I'd swap 1/2 and 3/4, but the overall shape (and certainly the bottom two) work for me.

Seasons one and two don't surprise me, though I've always been mildly baffled by the popularity of Queeg. Season three is where the first surprise occurs. The gimmicky Backwards beating the excellent character-based Marooned is ridiculous. As I alluded to above, this kind of thing goes to show the difference between the tastes of us serious fans and that of the casuals. Four and five hold no surprises. In six, Rimmerworld beating Out of Time I find surprising. To me, Out of Time was always one of the classic episodes (and my all time second favourite) but it never seems to perform well in these things. No surprises in seasons seven to ten, and the only surprise in season eleven is the poor performance of Twentica - though to be honest I'm more disappointed than surprised.

jmc, are you aware that in XI, your desired "1/2 and 3/4" swap would do absolutely nothing, given that they're actually rated exactly the same?
