Who's marking them?? Rimmer's still resitting his astronavigation exams into series x....how? Is it some sort of automatic marking via the ship itself? As even holly isn't around by this point, so whre do the exam papers go, and who sends out the results?

The same thing that's awarding Howard Rimmer the posthumous medal and telling them to rename the ship in his honour. The same thing that's reprimanding Rimmer for not reporting for duty. The same thing they have to bribe and return the toilet paper to to get money for the bribe. I assume it's the JMC Mainframe that they "made contact with" in Trojan.

I admit, when I first watched Trojan I got the impression that they'd re-established contact with Earth, but it's just an automated computer. Then they install Pree in the next episode - we don't know why, or where they got her from - then it goes back to the JMC mainframe.

True. They mention that Pree comes from a derelict but the rest of the things are all from the mythical mainframe :-)

Speaking of Rimmer's exams, Lister is still taking that robotics course as far as we know. Wonder how he's coming along.

Could I just sat this is absolute genius on Lister's part and the first peak of his true intelligence.

Only him and the Cat have tastebuds. The Cat can't keep the attention long enough to evaluate the dish. He can't taste it being the candidate, thus forcing Holly to use analysis equipment which may not be designed to determine the criteria of the exam.

In short, he played the system for its blind side to make it more likely he'd pass.

Not so much genius, but Lister finding the easiest exam to take. And he wasn't too upset by failing, as he had managed to get at least some of what he wanted when Cat betrayed Rimmer and told him that the cigarettes where the cigarettes were. With the cigarettes back, Rimmer didn't have anything to blackmail Lister into working for.
