I assume some of the Mechs in Siliconia are former humans who had their minds transferred to mech bodies and the clothing and food is their previous belongings

I mentioned the nanobots in one of the RDXII threads, and it got me thinking.

WTS is going on with the nanobots?!

In Backwards, we learn that Lister had to rebuild Kryten manually after his accident:

In Terrorform, Kryten's visuals are fixed by some "auto-repair systems", but these are limited in what they can do:

So, how does this work? Kryten's nanobots can turn a spaceship into a planetoid and back again, and make working human beings from carbon molecules... but they can't repair his crushed legs?! Surely they could turn his crushed legs into a delicious champagne breakfast, and from there to a living poodle, before finally turning them back to working legs? How is it possible for Lister to perform repairs on Kryten that are apparently beyond the nanobots, when the nanos were able to perform far more intricate repairs on Lister's own body?

The obvious "fix" is that Kryten lost his nanobots before we met him, but that doesn't work. In Nanarchy, he says he isn't sure when he lost them, but mentions that he last used them on the Esperanto - in Back to Reality. That means Kryten had them when he crashed the space bike, and again when his legs were crushed at the start of Terrorform. So, what on Earth is going on here?!

    Explain that!

They hate Kryten, because he is so bald, so they just don't obey him. :-D

They are still affected by the dispear squid and never actually escaped like they thought they did.

@jmc2000 Maybe Kryten obtained the nanobots sometime between Terrorform and Back to Reality.

Back to reality was originally intended to be the 1st episode of series 5 it was the first episode shown on the repeat of series 5 and when they repeated all the episodes of series 1-6 in 1994 and on the VHS release so that could be why he was unable to repair himself in Terrorform

Here’s a question, in Back to Reality how come Kryten and Rimmer were affected by the despair squids ink, being electronic beings, but Holly wasn’t?

Remember Rimmer never left the bug either.

Maybe it had developed to include holograms and mechanoids - but couldn't sense actual computers as life forms?

My guess is that the other guys took the ink essence with them, or the ink's influence entered the ship when the squid attacked.

on the "Red Dwarf" CD-ROM, is there a way to get out of the dungeon without a wizard's key?

Well, who's to say the despair ink can't affect mechanoids. Why it affected Rimmer is a mystery. But the real mystery is why it affected any of them. Cat and Kryten never touched it, and Lister picked it up with huge thick gloves on. But that's assuming it works via contact. Maybe it works via inhalation. Kryten does breathe, I think.
