What I don't understand is how well the show is received, especially the last two series, yet Doug seems unable to secure funding for the movie.

    WHY??

The movie was dropped about a decade ago, so however well received Back to Earth or Series X were will have basically no effect. I don't think we'll ever see a Red Dwarf movie, that's not necessarily a bad thing though, Red Dwarf is something that I think works better as a series anyway.

The funding was there by the big studios, but only if Doug made concessions that he was unwilling to make. One studio at least offered him the money, but only if they recast it. They told him they wanted Hugh Grant to play Lister.

I think we'll eventually see the Red Dwarf Movie, but not for another 30-odd years once the TV show has long been lost into obscurity. Once the main cast are definitelly too old to play the roles they can recast. I imagine it to be much like the awful Hitchhiker's movie.

I can only assume that Hugh Grant was mentioned as he seems to be one of Hollywood's go-to Actors for if they want a "nice" Englishman rather than a villainous one. I'd have to also assume though that whoever came up with that particular cinematic gem knew absolutely nothing about Red Dwarf and must not have even read any scripts properly or at all.

God that would have been terrible, he's absolutely the wrong man to play Lister.

I give it two years before some executive here in the States stumbles across a Red Dwarf DVD and has the brilliant idea to reboot it as a feature film with Christian Bale as Lister, Steve Buscemi as Rimmer, Will Smith as Cat, Angelina Jolie as Holly.. and Robert Llewellyn as Kryten. Michael Bay directing of course.

And don't worry about how bad it'll be, because two years after than it'll only be rebooted again.

Crowdfunding the movie is a real possibilty. The intent could be posted on a relevant site, and we'll see just how much people want it. I'll happily pledge. If we reach the stated target, then: Yippee! If we don't reach the stated target, then there's no harm done to our wallets - plus we'll have the painful truth confirmed in cold hard numbers that we just don't want it enough.

This made me lauh so hard, but oddly enough I do like that idea, WS is someone Cat could see as a role model perhaps, so I culd see it working.

Perhaps an article on the costs and politics of funding a sci-fi TV series in order?

True. I loved the original two-headed Zaphod Beeblebrox, not the one who's head is thrown back to reveal another one beneath it.
Am I right in thinking that the original Marvin the Paranoid Android appeared in the movie?
