O.K. I'm old, actually I'm Old. There are many things I remember that either just aren't around anymore or have changed beyond all memory. I know that most if not all of you are considerably younger but as fast as the world turns I'm sure there are things changed or just gone that you can remember. What are they? Do you miss them?

Here's a few things I can remember that have just disappeared.

I remember when Cashiers actually had to key in every purchase's price by hand. No bar codes or scanners. Man .... a good one's fingers would FLY over that cash register!

I remember rotary dials on telephones. And real pay phone booths.

I remember when there were only 3 T.V. stations period. Broadcast at that.

Speaking of T.V. , I can remember when all the shows were in Black & White. AND when Color came in. (it was thrilling!)

I remember "Gas Wars" where the stations would compete by dropping gasoline prices. Cheapest I can recall was .24 cents a gallon.

Well, enough for now. What has disappeared or changed beyond recognition from YOUR lives?

I remember watching Ceefax for the football scores. I used to hold my hand in front of my eye to cover one half of the screen so I could only see if Arsenal had scored. If we hadn’t I’d switch if off.

I was reading through this thinking "yep, remember that", "and that" etc until it got to the gas wars bit and thought "cents? WFT is he on about it's pounds and pence not cents" Then it occurred to me that the other points you made are the same as we had in the UK. What were the 3 TV channels you had, as I never thought that the US only had 3?

    As for what I remember:

    Spangles
    ZX81
    ZX Spectrum
    etc...
    Bovril Crisps
Home made Coleslaw/Potato Salad/Onion & cucumber in vinegar ( I do make my own pickle onion, but throw a Ghost pepper in to spice things up).
Playing full contact rugby league at school - it is all tag rugby now.

Just the affiliates of the big 3. ABC , CBS, NBC. I remember when Fox (yep) first appeared as a 4th alternative in some markets. All syndicated old favorites , LATE NITE MOVIES past 11:00p.m. Yeah, I remember when T.V. shut off at 11:00 or 12:00. Test pattern and all. Anyway Fox kind of opened the gates for other more locally focused ,syndication based UHF stations and the rest is history as they say.

A Man who chooses his words well ,my young friend :-).

I remember a few things from yesteryear...
    • BBC 1
      BBC2
      Meridian
      Channel 4
      Ceefax
      Oracle
      Rotary dial phones
Colour TV as b&w had gone by the time I'd been aware of it
Local shops closing half-day on Wednesdays
      Sweets costing a penny
Trying to get to grips with post-decimal money
      Test card girl
      TV shutting off around midnight

Ps - I'm sure @BadOleSantabot is not old

Pps - I wouldn't put too many Ghost peppers in food: might do an impression on a dragon farting fire... (!):lol:

Ppps - is @metallithrax a fan of Rush, Metallica and Anthrax?

I remember when the local petrol stations would close half a day to a full day on Christmas.

When we didn't have mail delivery and would have to pick out mail up from the petrol station.

I remember when milk was still delivered

I remember not having a computer and the school had 2 computers for the whole school. By the time my sibblings went through school everyone had computers.

I remember dial up very well since it was our only internet option and was very excited when DSL was connected in 06.

We had a special lesson when the school got dial up internet and got shown the internet together in the library. Can't remember if that was 94 or 95.

Remember getting up to change channels don't since our original TV had a dial. We always had 5 channels (6 if you include a local channel that I'm not sure is still around) until the digital multichannels came out. Techically still have 5 main channels that have 2-4 additional channels each.

Indeed he is. From the question, can I assume that you too are a fan of Rush?
