Heh. I don't think that will happen. It would smeg off a lot of fans. Beside, the stasis booths aren't based on cryogenic suspension. The latter literally freezes you preserving your body until you are revived later. The stasis booths work by creating a kind of field that time cannot penetrate. (In effect, one works by preventing the passage of time affecting you. The other affectively stops time for you.)

Dave didn't go to sleep. If I understand correctly, from his point of view, he stepped in, then a few seconds later (i.e the time taken for the field to be activated then deactivated) stepped out. When he said to Holly "But I just stepped in there" (or words to that effect) he wasn't mistaken as from his POV that's what happened.

    Mind = blown

Alternatively that premise could actually have been the setup for the next "trick the fans" style episode (ala BTR & BTE) and provided the opportunity for a really unsettling episode with plenty of Philip K Dick style what's real/what isn't moments as little clues emerged that all was not as it seemed. It would have had to have been done along time ago though as nowerdays the age difference is too noticeable for the characters to pick up where they left off. Season 8's flashback was already pushing it.

The science behind sci-fi. :-) Appreciate the education in things stasis.

I still wonder about the theory though. We know that other devices break and need repair on Red Dwarf, what if the stasis chamber also malfunctioned. Hence causing a dream like state and causing him to age at the same time. I don't think I would be smegged off by this (being a fan). I think if this is to be the last of Red Dwarf series and the company wants to move on to a spin off show (or an entirely new show), it would be a satisfactory closing to the show. What are the alternatives really? Blowing up the ship (a la Star Trek) and also killing everybody off would anger me. After the immense passage of time, they can't just simply return to Earth - too soap opera like for me. I vote a wake-up from stasis (then again - I am not a writing comedic genius that has made this series so successful).

I actually don't think I'd be too upset with that as an ending. Like JMC I'd rather have a bittersweet ending like BTE than a silly ending like them crashing on earth and destroying civilisation (cough) or an unresolved cliffhanger.

I'd ideally like some variation on the Fiji theme though with Lister getting his plan to some sort of fruition, a shot of Kochanski riding a horse and a nice carribean riff on the Red Dwarf theme tune to end it all...but then I'm nearly as foolish a romantic as Lister is :-) Maybe something akin to the ending of Last Human would work. That book gave me confidence that Doug does know how to write a great ending (even though I've since been informed he didn't actually plan that to be the ending of the books).

I actually would like them to return to Earth at some point as I'm curious to see what Earth (if it exists) would be like three million years in the future. I don't think it should all be perfect though, or that the show should end there.

Spoilers for Red Dwarf novels and film script:

Some kind of twist like the Garbage World of the books or the Homo Sapienoid empire of the film story would be interesting... or something else entirely.

Maybe they'd settle on a planet (even Earth) eventually, but it wouldn't necesarily be a bad thing if Red Dwarf just continued on into the great beyond.

If no more series are made (and I hope and trust they will be!)I do think BtE finale actually worked rather well.

Disagree with this. If they ever get to Earth, or some sort of liveable earth like planet then I'd want that to be the close of the show, otherwise I fear it might get itself into a situation that while fun for a couple of episodes, would ultimately feel like a different show. See series 8 for an example of that.

It would for Lister! Doesn't anybody care about the man getting his dream? :x

Agree 100% with this. BTE ends, like Last Human, not with a perfect ending but with an important quality for characters you care about: hope.

I've just had a thought about the 'Mirror/rorriM' edit. I know there were problems in that if they cut out Talia and the escape pod from the Hermes it would be hard to explain the chameleonic virus, but what if instead Red Dwarf was eaten away by one of the programmable viruses from 'Pete' Part 1? Rimmer or Lister could accidentally spill one programmed to eat away at metal whilst being escorted to/sneaking into the Science Labs on Z-Deck.

    Lol..120...should only provoke mild annoyance.

I got a cross-training machine so that I could work out while watching TV at home when I don't feel like going to the gym. I rewatch certain shows so often (especially Red Dwarf) that I feel like I need to be doing something to justify taking the time.

Most recent episode as of today - Gunmen of the Apocolypse.

    Future Echoes.

A great episode. I still wonder, if I had given Dwarf another chance back when it first came out, would this episode have kept me? (Not that The End is particularly bad, but I didn't like it at the time.) As it was, it was Series 3: Marooned which got me liking the show, but I didn't really follow it properly until much later.

It wasn't until that Red Dwarf night that I saw more, and I didn't see all the episodes until I got the DVDs. (I pretty much followed series 6 all the way through on the telly, though. I love that series.)

From series 7's bonus materials :-D

    Tikka-To-Ride & Orobrobs - Extended versions
Loved them - funny it was usually cat realated gag's that got cut and some other cool dialog - made it very fresh and enjoyed the remastered CGI of Tikka big improvement in the small amount of scenes that used it in that episode

Identity Within - the lost episode.
For those of you know don't know this is an unmade episode shot in a storyboard still cartoon sketch mode. Don't want to spoil it for anybody who hasn't seen it so I wont mention much. I loved it I can see why it wasn't made due to budget restraints at the time and hope this or something similar gets made. I would have enjoyed it as the elusive film story line. Defo recommend getting the Dvd and watching it - always such a treat to see new Red Dwarf material!

Know the feeling - I watched Future Echoes re-mastered last night when my sense of humour had deserted me and didn't even smile, not even at one of my favourite laugh out load moments when Rimmer gets a new hairstyle. Will watch again when I'min a different frame ofmind.

out of time series 6, by far my favorite series. they seem to be hitting it on all cylinders with that one, showing that series to my mom who is always into good comedy, she has read the first book too.
