I like the gelfs and I can understand their reason for being created. It helped expand the universe a bit for one thing and provided
the opportunity for other types of stories.

I would have liked a bit more explanation as to why the specific species of gelfs were created though, if only to emphasize that these aren't just alien surrogates. Ok, I suppose technically they are but I'm sure you know what I mean. The idea that humanity is involved in extensive genetic engineering in the years between Dwarf's 21st/2nd/2rd era and 3 million years in the future is an intriguing one. We know the Polymorphs were created as a kind of shape-shifting super soldier. We know the pleasure gelfs were made for... well, the explanation is in the title. I've often wondered why the Psirens were created though. Same reason as the polymorphs, but with a more psychological twist? And why the kinitawowi? (Actually an explanation is given in the unmade Cat episode, but I'm not sure how official to consider that.)

Fair point on the Psirens and Kinitawowi.

Here's some giggles about the latter's origin: link.

I reckon that GELFs like the Kinatawowi were probably created by Human scientists for slave labour and combat purposes. I mean, they're clearly stronger and more resiliant than Humans and so they'd be useful in environments that we wouldn't last long in (their thick hides would provide warmth on arctic worlds and they might have camel like water-storing organs for desert worlds etc.). Plus, their low, primitive intelligence level would probably make them easier to control than psychopathic Simulants.
Also, Pleasure GELFs like Camille were no doubt designed for the sex work market. Any pimp or escort agency could charge top dollar for an employee who could become the clients perfect partner and fall completely in love with them. No doubt these would be popular with astros on long-term deep-space missions and could be found in seedy bars on the outer colonies.

I've often thought they were designed as labourers, certainly. Actually, I think that was suggested in the novel Last Human. So I guess there is a somewhat official explanation after all but it would have been nice to see it in the episode.

I'd like to add though, I'm just stating a preference here. I don't mean that as a major criticism! Actually, it's hardly likely the Red Dwarf crew would know everything about the beings they encounter.

That was brilliant! I like that origin. Gar Barge. Heh.

I'm not sure they're actually as primitive as they come across though. Their culture and customs, and their use of bows, etc, has a suggests primitivism, certainly but I don't think that means they are particularly lacking in intelligence. They are able to fix technology to sell for example and pilot space ships. Space ships that can penetrate non-space.

I'll just be stoked for a new series, to be honest. I'd prefer they do it with an audience as that just adds such a good vibe to the whole show, but I'd be fine with a series in step with Back to Earth in terms of style and substance.

An idea I had was how about exploring the bowels of Red Dwarf? This is a ship the size of a city, but we haven't really seen much other than the Brig, the sleeping quarters, the bridge and the officers' lounge. Wouldn't mind seeing what else they could find on the ship. (or perhaps just some more hikes from Rimmer and the scutters).

It would definitely be interesting if they ran into some other members of the Cat species as well. There was still one Ark out there - something like that unaired episode from Season VII would certainly be interesting. Bah -- anything they put out and I'll be happy to watch it.

    1) Every time Dwayne Dibley came up following Back to Reality, I loved it. Bring him back at least once.
    2) PLEASE GOD NO CGI!!! I enjoyed the very shoddy effects from early Dwarf, and to be honest, a studio audience probably wont find it as funny in front of a green screen.
    3) That brings me to the studio audience, bring it back. I am 16, and there is nothing I wouldn't give to be in that audience. Not to mention that BTE just didn't seem the same without the laughter to punctuate the hilarious moments that without it you wouldn't find so funny.
    4) I wouldn't want to see a episode centred on one character. It wouldn't be the same without the whole crew to feed off each other's energy.
    5) Keep the original Red Dwarf crew DEAD!

That is all I ask for.
    Thank you ^.^

    .

Having an episode based on one character doesn't mean the other characters wouldn't be there too or wouldn't have a part to play in the episode. Unless your talking literally about an episode based solely around a character marooned alone somewhere.

Here's what i would like to see in the new series.

I would like it to follow straight on from BTE.

i would like it to have the same look and feel as BTE, IE no audience, Good CGI, Filmed in HD. The new Comedy/drama element

Each episode has got to be 42 mins long 60 mins with ads.

I would like to see more of the red dwarf and bring back star bug and blue midget, Star bug would do if the moneys tight.

I'd be happy with anything that Doug and Dave pull together. Here's hoping they get a nice 40 minute time slot though to keep the original feel of the episodes. I've followed Red Dwarf for the past 8 years of my life, given that i wasnt old enough to watch them all when they were played on the BBC and would love to see a new series come about.
    Good luck guys!

    hi all,

i feel in my bones that there will be a new series...
i meen there has to be, because it would be criminal
to leave lister and co drifting through space with
    so many loose ends.
as for episode length, i do know that the standard length
originaly given for each episode was 29 minutes (don't ask
me why...but it was, according to some of the series dvd
documentaries) although apparently doug naylor has in the past
become so passionate over scripts that some past episodes
did expand a bit further than the 29 minutes. therefore,
it is possible that scripts in the future may be extensive.
on another note, i would dearly love to see a red dwarf movie
as it's the only logical conclusion to the RD phenomenon.

I'd be very suprised if there wasnt a new series now, especially since Chris Barrie has mentioned it on his website. And from what I was told back in January, it sounds like its going ahead. I wouldnt be suprised if we find something out at dimension jump again. But we'll have to just wait and see.

29 minutes would be a good length for the episodes (would be longer though if it was up to me) so I'm hoping they stick to that and have them stretch over 40 mins or whatever it is with the ad breaks in, rather than be half an hour including adverts. The back to earth episodes seemed far too short to me, but then I'm not used to watching dwarf with advert breaks.

As for the movie, Id rather they just concentrated on more episodes.

    - Firstly, I would like a bit of continuity in the very format of the show;
A Series IX - continueing on from series VIII and onto the Back to Earth Specials +
A Series X - leading on from Back to Earth specials.
(Obviously with a 9th series you'd have to incorporate the aspects of the series actually mentioned in the Back to Earth specials)
    - post seres IX and X, a movie would be nice, but if a movie is never to be on the agenda for one reason or another, why not a feature-length tv movie/episode? BSG made these a popular phenomena, why not have a feature length Red Dwarf ep, that seperates series IX and X from a further ideally prospective series XI and XII?

    - I think the series should take mind of budget and keep to 6 episodes, and 45 mins in length (30 mins is too short), and should keep the CGI expanded stuff going as preferred to staged sets and models, as well as staying rid of the laughter track (the specials actually reminded me of LEXX at it's very best actually).
    - Obviously I think the characters Lister, Rimmer, Kryton and Cat should make a return, but I think that Katerina should become a main character, and that they should find Kochanski towards the end of series X.
    - I think that the series should again focus on the red dwarf, but make full use of the subsiduary ships such as star bug, blue midget and maybe more. And i have to say I liked the sort of manic pace of series V, but if they were to intersperse this with lengths of time full of great dialogue and character exploration (as was done quite well in Back to Earth) then that would be great. As well as exploring the empty silent vessel of the red dwarf as in the early series.
    - I think that the series IX should evolve around Red Dwarf with Hattie Haybridgereturning as Holly (I can't see norman lovett returning), then in early eps of series X they should become seperated from the Red Dwarf and perhaps find an alternate vessel also abandoned, perhaps the 'White Giant', which could have a more war-like quantity (like a Battle Star) with a new Holly (perhaps Keith Allen).

    - I think dwayne dibley should make a reaapearance as a mad serial killer,
the crew should go into stasis for along period of time at some point,
the crew should get stranded (as rumoured) but only for like 2 eps at most, and this could be a great way to pastiche the likes of Lost or BSG or Caprica,
The crew should face off against an evil race of aliens (space fights and all).

    ....
Lastly, of course I - like other fans - wish I was the one writing the series lol But Naylor is more than capable, espeically since he's had a long period of absence from writing Red Dwarf, so ideas should be aplenty. I hope that the series doesnt become too limited and confined to a single paradigm or setting with lack of space travel (e.g. series VIII).
