Well not having read the novel I don't know, but similarly I don't know if it's cannon or not (never really understand that kind of thing). But if the cat saved them all it can't have been too long before Lister comes out of Stasis and since RD was big enough to hold a city, the food supply must've been pretty big. What is more intriguing is how the Cats survived before they found the dry food.
Maybe we're assessing this way too much. :-D

its great to see in Future Echos Rimmer say to Lister, 'You can't wack death on the head' ... when 11 years later at the end of series 8 he knees him in the balls.

I'd like to think there is a certain amount of thought behind this by Doug but probs just a coincidence

It's a big gun. ;-) In this sense 'canon' is used to mean 'in continuity' and 'legitimate'.

Hence, if I wrote a piece of Red Dwarf fanfic, it wouldn't be canon.

I'm not keen on the term as it's way overused, but I'd say the series and the books are all canon, both being from the creators of Red Dwarf. They're separate continuities however. (Which slightly contradicts my statement above, but when you consider that RD allows for multiple universes, it makes sense.)

ah right fair enuf. thatnks for the insight. but i would argue for a show like RD to work and continue to be funny you have to allow for a certain amount for continuity errors, becasue their aim is not to make people laugh ... not keep a strict time line of events.

altho it wud have been nice to get listers relationship with Kochanski right. from her not liking him / not sleeping with him etc in series 1 (as confirmed in balance of power) and having only spoken 173 words, to having dated and borken up blah blah as is mentioned from series 4 DNA onwards.

as for the multiverse theory, its a great theory, but for it to be the reason there is soo much incontinuity, they would have to explain in the show (in my view) that its a different verse from previous series

Ahh, good old series II, those were the days! I'm seriously tempted to copy your marathon antics, I've got the day off tomorrow and all, I just really lack the stamina. :-(
