    I do hope we get to find out what the earth of that time period is like, and what happened to the human race.

    Not so Lister would stay there necessarily. I'm just very curious, and it could be some good story material.

    They may not talk about it, because its a given perhaps? (playing devil's advocate)

    There was an unproduced episode called "Earth" which was supposed to end Series VIII. In this episode the crew finally got back to real-time proper Earth and saw what happened. This was also the plot of the unproduced film.
