Apparently, it didn't have the desired effect on cardiovascular health. At the end of the trial, they asked the test subjects to return their unused pills... but they all seemed strangely reluctant to part with them! The scientists thought it was fishy and did some digging, and the rest is history.
No idea if that's true or apocryphal, but I love the story. It's like something from a pharmaceutical sitcom.
