Personally I think rd is now utterly dead on its tired arse, and the latest series has utterly proved this. Countless callbacks, trip/encounter of the week, cashing in on old stars, rimmer's umpteenth alter ego, and the fact that the biggest whoops come from older series re-appearances.

But am i I simply being to much of an old fan cynic. Can the series actually appeal to a younger non classic rd follower crowd? Does it stand up for itself if we take it as a standalone new comedy from series 9 onwards? Some of the concepts are still excellent, even if what comes along with them is dreck, so is this enough to keep it alive, and should us older fans just accept that its never going to be what it once was. Or should it now be put to sleep for the final time and taken off its breathalyser?

I think callback aren't so bad. Red Dwarf has 30 years long history, so why can't it reunite some old scenes, characters and sets?! But there's also load of new ideas - basicaly the whole series except Skipper gives lot of new stuff. I don't think these new series are to atract new young fans and even if so, why can't the old fans get a great nostalgic episode?

I've really liked the last two seasons. There were enough good ideas and originality in there to demonstrate that the show still isn't getting stale even after thirty years.

Whatever we think about callbacks or how Dave-era series compare to classic-era series, from what I can tell it's still going strong. We've just watched the second of two series commissioned to be made back to back. That's a big investment (you could almost see it as a twelve episode series being commissioned), and it seems to have paid off. So, no, you crotchety old goit, it's not dead and/or on its arse, it's alive and kicking.

I think this thread belongs in the Red Dwarf XI/XII conference with an RDXI/XII tag on it.

Also what do you even think a breathalyzer is?

Yeah, it probably SHOULD have been posted in the XI/XII or Universe sections but its here. Lets just try to keep the spoilers out for the ones who haven't been able to see them yet.

I actually thought XII was an excellent series on the whole. In fact only one serious clunker in the last two series for me. XII 's Skipper and XI's Officer Rimmer are among my favorite episodes period. So, no I don't think its dead on its ass or even close to it. Plenty of the Posse yet to be, hopefully.

Yes, there was a few "call backs", especially in XII's last few episodes but not enough to warrant condemnation for. As I mentioned in another thread , more smiles than laughs for me as far as the call backs go. Besides, it WAS nice to see and hear ole Holly again!

I meant respirator not breathalyzer. So it seems many disagree with me, fair enough. Guess we'll have to agree to disagree

I liked the two new series, and you should've heard me squeal when I saw Norman Lovett appear on the screen! I practically deafened Mr Kittypaws, and our cat went running in the opposite direction! :-D

Well, to be fair ...... its pretty widely known that Holly makes an appearance at some point. Wasn't it even in the trailers?
But yeah, would have been happier if this had been posted somewhere else.
