It would be interesting if someone could create some site / excel document that lets people do what you have and then it will report on some stats such as

    - Overall most popular episode
    - Overall popular series
    - Overall worst episode
    etc

Someone already did. The user Presuming Ken did one for the first 9 seasons, and the results are here:

    http://www.reddwarf.co.uk/forum/messages.cfm?threadid=F0C90806-1999-AFED-B4E627C191349C64

Later, I did one for season 10 and mixed the results with Ken's list:

    http://www.reddwarf.co.uk/forum/messages.cfm?messageid=34A3D002-1999-AFED-B44CFBF3BD5AC9EE#34A3D002-1999-AFED-B44CFBF3BD5AC9EE

I was going to do another one for this season and mix the results again but I lacked the enthusiasm for going through all that one more time, and besides a: there's not many users here compared to when season 10 aired, and b: there's one of these lists that hundreds of people have contributed to on the IMDb, which will probably give a more accurate picture of the fans' taste:

Why not take the scores off IMDB? Every Red Dwarf episode from I to X has hundreds of user ratings out of ten, and I'm sure RD XI will be the same before long.

I actually have I to X in a spreadsheet already. It doesn't take long to click "next episode" repeatedly, making a note of each score. And the results are better than you'd get if you did your own poll, I think, because each score is based on hundreds of user ratings.

EDIT: Lol, what a doofus - Bluey already suggested it :-)

I think that it would be far more interesting to see individual opinions of the people here, to what they think each series scores and how we think the new series stacks up. I mean if we go by IMDB scores the Trojan was a better episode then Out of Time....so I don't put much stock in that.

But how do you justify dismissing it? Both scores are based on hundreds of fan ratings. Trojan versus Out of Time might be a surprising result - but it would be interesting to explore it.

We can't just say we "don't put much stock" in a survey of hundreds of Red Dwarf fans, because the result didn't tally with our personal taste.

What I mean is that IMDB scores are usually by casual fans who vote their initial opinions without the benefits of being reflected on. A lot of the time newer episodes will rank better for this reason will often rank better then episodes made before IMDB even existed (unless people really hated it), it's why newer movies tend to get better scores then movies 20 years ago or older. Secondly it's not like we can get much insights from individuals when we don't even know who they are!

I take your point that IMDB isn't perfect, but no metric will be.

Apart from the surprisingly high score of Trojan, the scores aren't that surprising to me, tbh. The highest and lowest scoring eps certainly aren't very shocking, although Dear Dave wasn't as low as I expected.

    I to X:

    5.6 Back to Reality 9.2
    5.4 Quarantine 9.1
    3.3 Polymorph 8.9
    6.2 Legion 8.9
    2.5 Queeg 8.8

As always, Bluey is the man with answers!

I'm sort of in the camp with Slainmonkey in the sense that it's that the views of this fan base may differ from the wider generic audience.

Still, both has interesting data of course, for example:
    - IMDB shows Blue on the same ratings as Ourobros
    - Bluey's combo list showed The beginning above Dimensional Jump!

And the mediocre Entangled above both Holoship and Demons & Angels - which I think is outrageous!

I actually liked Entangled, but no way is it as good as either Holoship or Demons and Angels!

Well, I had a little look at the two lists. Bluey's treats (e.g.) BITR as one episode - so, to compare between the two, I split multi-parters into episodes and gave them adjacent positions with the same score.

Each episode has two ranks. One from IMDB and one from the forum. On average, each episode's forum rank is fewer than six places away from its IMDB rank.

The ranking of the IMDB list is a bit arbitrary because there's only one decimal place. Where several episodes scored (e.g.) 8.6, they've been ranked randomly within that.

The areas of largest disagreement are as follows:

    Episodes preferred by IMDB

Stoke Me a Clipper, Lemons, Backwards, Rimmerworld, Trojan, Fathers and Suns, The Last Day and Meltdown all ranked at least ten places higher on IMDB.

    Episodes preferred by the forum

Entangled, Future Echoes, The Inquisitor and Kryten all ranked at least ten places higher on Bluey's list.

    Okay - here's a suggestion for a fused list.

Firstly, the forum members are much harsher than IMDB and use a bigger range of scores. Episodes of RDI to RDX score between 6.5 and 9.2 on IMDB, but between 3.74 and 9.41 on Bluey's list.

So, what I've done is normalise each list to use the full range of scores. In each case, the best episode becomes 10, the worst becomes 0, and the rest of the scores are spread between them - in the same ratios/distances as per the original list. It's analogous to transforming this:

    [_______A___B_C__D_E]
    [_________ABCD_____E]

    To something like this:

    [A______B__C____D__E]
    [A_B_C_D___________E]

For each episode, I then took a mean average of the two scores, which I called the "Dwarf score". The resulting ordering is:

    5.6 Back to Reality
    5.4 Quarantine
    3.3 Polymorph
    2.5 Queeg
    6.2 Legion
    3.2 Marooned
    4.4 White Hole
    6.3 Gunmen of the Apocalypse
    4.5 Dimension Jump
    6.6 Out of Time
    4.3 Justice
    2.3 Thanks for the Memory
    2.2 Better Than Life
    10.6 The Beginning
    5.2 The Inquisitor
    3.1 Backwards
    2.4 Stasis Leak
    1.6 Me²
    10.1 Trojan
    6.5 Rimmerworld
    1.2 Future Echoes
    3.5 Timeslides
    5.1 Holoship
    4.2 DNA
    6.1 Psirens
    5.3 Terrorform
    3.6 The Last Day
    10.2 Fathers and Suns
    5.5 Demons and Angels
    2.1 Kryten
    3.4 Bodyswap
    2.6 Parallel Universe
    1.1 The End
    10.4 Entangled
    4.6 Meltdown
    8.4 Cassandra
    10.3 Lemons
    7.1 Tikka to Ride
    7.2 Stoke Me a Clipper
    6.4 Emohawk: Polymorph II
    1.5 Confidence and Paranoia
    1.3 Balance of Power
    4.1 Camille
    10.5 Dear Dave
    1.4 Waiting for God
    7.5 Blue
    7.7 Epideme
    7.3 Ouroborous
8.1 Back in the Red: Part 1
8.2 Back in the Red: Part 2
    8.5 Krytie TV
8.3 Back in the Red: Part 3
    7.8 Nanarchy

No real time to look at the data properly but the results of your data doctoring seems closet to my view of the world.

It does sadden me to see Holoship and some others I adore only mid way on list.

I'm still shocked how high The Beginning is!

I always think that Out of Time is underappreciated by the fans. And I think Gunmen and Marooned should both be closer to the summit. And why is Queeg always so loved?

My opinions on the episodes change with the wind. At the moment Red Dwarf is on a continual loop on Netflix just going round and round - and I find it impossible to rate them. How I feel about an episode changes with the wind. I said I thought DNA was a boring episode in another thread a few days ago. I watched it again the other day and regretted saying that because I thought it was great. I would normally say Stasis Leak was a great episode, but when it came up next in line I skipped it. I couldn't be bothered with Stasis Leak.

To give the episodes a number seems weird to me, because tomorrow I'd feel differently.

They should both be in the top 5 though - and probably taking positions 2 and 3.

Interesting list. I don't think I could rate every episode like that, but I know Quarantine would be near the top and Duct Soup (as well as all of VIII for that matter) would be near the bottom.
