Out of Time is one of my favourite episodes, possibly top of the list. It's the only one to just have the four of them without any guest actors or voices (Demons and Angels comes close but has Holly as well) and really uses every part of the Starbug set from throughout series VI. I know the production was very hectic but I think the rush to get things done actually makes it a great episode.

It upsets me to see Beyond a Joke so low down the list. It's actually always been one of my favourites from Series VII. I appreciate I'm in the minority with this.

It's odd because I actually don't mind Beyond a Joke, hardly one of the best episodes the shows has done....but I don't see how people think it's one of the worst either.

Lister literally roundhouse kicking a simulant.

Do you need any other examples?

I never said it was a great episode, but I still don't what how that is worse then pretty much anything in series 8.

To be honest any episodes that don't feature Rimmer at all are immediately handicapped.

What's wrong with roundhouse kicking a simulant?

This is a much better reason, Infact that is the second biggest problem with Duct Soup....that episode really highlighted how much was missing from the character dynamic in Rimmer's absence (the first was the Kryten was still at his most whiny worst in that episode). I do think that after Chris Barrie left in series VII, the show felt majorly compromised....but it's not the worst the show has to offer.

Actually series XI for my was the first series since 6 that didn't feel like a compromised version of the show, but a true (albeit not without it's problems) continuation.

I liked that bit :-) And am generally a big fan of the episode (and most of series 7). But then Emohawk is one of my personal favourites so what do I know? ;-)

I'm another who loved Beyond a Joke. It has a great plot, and Don Henderson made a wonderfully scary and funny simulant. I believe it was also Henderson's last ever TV role.

That's correct. He was likely very poorly at the time.

The husky voice was his own, no special sound effects.

Out of Time is one of my favourite, if not actual favourite episode of Red Dwarf. Growing up I liked the fan favourites but as an adult I just love that episode. It is something I can actually relate to personally as I have seen friends completely lose their way and end up corrupt in the worst way - people I used to admire just becoming rather awful human beings. I've also worked with complete psychos who are a lot older than me, but who are just enough like me to make me think "Jesus Christ, if I stay here, doing this, will I end up like that too?". Some people I've known really are "amoral, self serving scum" while they probably view me as "a stuck up pompous prig". That exchange between Kryten and the future crew, with Lister losing his rag out of frustration is such a great idea.

I think it's actually a concept worthy of a proper movie, and it ends like a movie, with character arcs being fulfilled brilliantly. And it's still really funny. Great drama, great comedy, perfectly balanced. It's just Red Dwarf firing on all cylinders.

Rimmer's morale meeting is just perfection. One of my favourite scenes in Red Dwarf history, still pure comedy gold.

Edit P.S. (1) I rewatched Back To Earth and, I have to say, quite liked it. The metafictional element to the story still bugs me though (it feels very "jumping the shark" to me). Putting that aside, Back To Earth is good for what it is and I'm grateful it came about, I mean there'd be no X, XI or XII without it, right?

Edit P.S. (2) I'm actually a little annoyed about Series V. I was hoping Series III would wind up being my favourite series overall (I have a keen fondness for it to tell you the truth), but the sheer quality of V means, episode by episode, I have to say I did find it better than III. Dammit, why does Series V have to be so good?!?

Edit P.S. (3) Just finished rewatching/reviewing Series VI. I absolutely hate my scores. They don't reflect the way I felt watching the show back. VI is great, very atmospheric and action-packed. It's hell of a lot of fun, and I can only surmise the final rating of 7.67 is because I'm a bit of a nob.

Edit P.S. (4) Still have IV and XI to go, but after finishing VIII... wow. The series contains, for me at least, the five worst episodes of Red Dwarf. Ever.

Final Edit: I'd say Back in the Red: Part 2 is the worst episode simply because I feel it was a bit boring, kinda pointless, and overstretched the whole Back in the Red story. However, both episodes of Pete do run it close. Series VIII, 'eh?

The last season definitely subject to change as it sinks in over time. However, This gels with my overall feeling that S5/S6 were the strongest, 7 was a drop and 8 a major drop, and then a slow climb with the last three seasons with this one being the strongest.

As for best / worst eps....I'd probably have to go with Polymorph as my all-time fave, and then the Back in the Red three-parter as my overall least favorite.

If there is one thing I've noticed is that I liked series X significantly less then most people, but like series XI maybe slightly more. I really liked the fact that I wasn't a one of the more negative people for once, given that I used to be one of the bigger grumble butts.....particularly everything from series VIII onward!

V is still one of my top 3 series as all the other episodes apart from Terrorform which is really strong anyway are just so immensely perfect. Anyway if you round up the .8 then that equals 10.

I won't include my ratings for series 11 yet as they are subject to change when the blu-ray is delivered tomorrow and I rewatch over the coming weeks/months.

But anyway as my name suggests I adore RD series 2 to 6 so much that they simply all deserve a perfect 10 (or rounded up with no decimal point for series V) - I just find it all so incredibly comical and clever!8:-(D

My average ratings also reflect how while I thought series 1 is a very strong start (sensational comedy but the stories aren't quite realising their full potential yet) I do prefer series 10 to it a bit more. However, the ratings also reflect how I feel series 1 is better than both 7 and 8 while BtE while it has got something (though overreliant on Bladerunner a good plot but too much flat humour) is confirmed as my least favourite RD.

The only things that are a bit "anomalous" are series 5 scoring slightly lower than series 2, 3 and 4 but I suppose like I said the decimal point can be rounded up to 10. Another thing I would also say is series 7's average rating is also a bit anomalous as probably I would see both 7 and 8 as having very similar and 7.7 might be a tiny bit too high. Still the crappy/mediocre final 3 episodes of series 8 really let its particular average score down.

Still generally the average scores are reflective of my relative enjoyment of all the first 10 series of RD. I know people might comment about all the tens that I have handed out but I honestly find the best series/episodes of RD so phenomenally amazing - the best show ever in television history IMHO!8:-(D Anyhow I have handed out some very average and low scores when rarely necessary for a few episodes from the late 90s!

Forgetting my "harsh" scores, my series scores ended as:

    1st place) Series IV - 8.42
    2nd place) Series V - 8.25
    3rd place) Series III - 8.12
    4th place) Series VI - 7.67
    5th place) Series II - 7.42
    6th place) Series XI - 7.25
    7th place) Series X - 7
    8th place) Series I - 6.92
    9th place) Series VII - 6.69
    10th place) Back To Earth - 6.33
    11th place) Series VIII - 6

I was trying to be as objective as I could be with my rankings, so the results do fairly reflect my critical views on the show. Watching them all back, I do believe IV to be the funniest series, which is why it came out on top. It may look like there is a small margin of difference between series VI and VIII (only 2.42), but the difference in quality for is much bigger, much deeper than that. VIII is an okay series, but not for something as good as Red Dwarf. And to make a point of it, I just want to say as well that I really like series X. It's a lot of fun.

However, in another warped way the scores don't perfectly reflect the way I see Red Dwarf. Namely...
    - I would say series III-V are all 9 out of 10 series's.
    - My score for VI doesn't reflect just how much fun I had watching the whole thing back-to-back (that's an 8 out of 10 for me).
    - And the biggie... III is still my favourite series. It's a case of heart over-ruling the head, but I just love it so much. How it's upgraded from series II, the vibe, the feel, that it's still an 80's sitcom at this point (unbelievable)... Series III will always be my favoutite individual television series.

Watching 'em all as cemented one thing in my mind though, Red Dwarf is one of the best television programmes around. No doubt about it, it's in my top three of ongoing programmes at the moment (the others being The Walking Dead and Luther), plus it's certainly in my all-time top five of the best shows I've ever seen, from anywhere in the world (no, universe in fact!)... But is it the best? Could be, could be...

Ah smeg it, it is!!! 8)
