I understood series XII was to follow XI immediately, and run like a 12 episode series??

If that's not the case, when does XII air?

    If only...

Though if that was the plan there'd be little point in having two series at all.

They were filmed back to back but XII isn't airing until next year. It's likely to be September again but would be nice to see it a bit earlier, seeing as it's pretty much ready :-)

Then how would it be two series? It would just be a single extra-long series!

I think it's airing next year. Dave clearly wanted two series of Red Dwarf lined up - one for 2016 and one for the future - but I'm guessing they were filmed back-to-back for logistical and budgetary reasons.

It must have been the 'filmed back to back' thing that confused me then. For whatever reason I took from this that the two series would also air back to back.

Nah, XII was always scheduled for 2017, I was hopeful it would be in the first half (Mar/Apr) but I think Doug said on Twitter that Sept is more likely.

Nobody ever said they would run back to back - we've said "2017" ever since the very first announcement! It says it in our FAQ, it says it on the RDXI info page, it says it on Twitter!

And before you ask, there's no more specific info than that yet. When it's known and confirmed, it'll be stated on here, as ever.

Yes, I think we've established that now

Oh, and do you have any more specific info than this?

Just in case no one has mentioned it yet, it has never been implied that RDXI and RDXII would be run back to back ;-)

I would hazard a guess RDXII will air around the same time in 2017 as RDXI did in 2016. Also from reading posts I understand that the recording studios have been booked up for December ish in 2017. If these bookings are for Red Dwarf then that would also suggest a sept/oct 2018 slot for RDXIII, which would make sense. 8)

Actually, in a lot of ways, Feb/March for XII makes sense if they are going to do XIII in 2018, because then they could do it in Feb/March 2018 which is Red Dwarf's 30th anniversary.

That said, I guess it's not totally important for any 30th anniversary celebrations to be marked either exactly on the date or even with a new series. I hope they do something though.

There! Simple, straight-forward answer. That's all I wanted.

Can't believe we have to wait a whole year for XII! They finally get the series back on track and then make us wait twelve damn months for more!!

Seriously, what is the logic behind not running a series that's ready to air? Absence makes the heart grow fonder? Good things come to those who wait? Just run it while people are still hungry!

I think they want maximum value out of the shows.

They're a channel that specialise in repeats. In recent years, they branched out into new commissions. I suspect they see "New Dwarf" as a way to pique interest in their channel, including re-runs of Dwarf and other shows. This way, they get to have another burst of interest in 2017 as well.

A twelve episode run would have diminishing returns, I imagine, in terms of the wider effect they want to see.

For instance: I'm guessing that the season opener for RD XII will get a larger number of viewers, and far more media interest, than the seventh ep of a hypothetical twelve ep season.

EDIT: I think the viewing figures are quite suggestive. The BARB website only has the first four up, but here they are.

Twentica - the most watched show for the week outside the five "terrestrial" channels

    Samsara - ditto

Give and Take - the third most watched non-terrestrial show

Officer Rimmer - the fifth most, etc..

By episode four, the seven day figures had slid from 1.38 million to the (still super-respectable!) 1.04 million. I'm guessing episode one of RD XII is likely to jump up again, after the year-long hiatus.

It kind of makes more sense if you look at it the other way around. They haven't been shot as one block and then arbitrarily split into two years' worth. Rather, they were commissioned as two separate series, always with the intent of being broadcast in 2016 and 2017, but produced back-to-back for a bunch of different reasons.

In addition to whats already been said, I'd take a guess that just because the filming's been completed doesn't mean any of the post-production work for XII has even been started let alone completed. I may be wrong in this as it's not an industry I'm familiar with, but from what I can gather the actual filming of the episodes is a relatively short part of the production process and there's an awful lot of work and effort that goes into taking that footage and turning it into finished product ready to air.

Of course I could be completely wrong, everything could be ready to go now and it's just a matter of waiting for the planned slot in the schedule.

If anything it does buy Doug time to get a series XIII for 2018, and other content ready for Red Dwarf's 30th anniversary....given the fact that's on the horizon maybe the wait isn't really such a bad thing. Maybe we can even get in a roll for yearly Red Dwarf releases for a few more series!
