This can be a one-off, a regular (if you dare), or a recurring character.

In my case it's the latter, specifically Talkie Toaster.

I know it's supposed to be irritating, but it's not even irritating in a good or funny way. I hate that stupid whiny voice it has. It's arrogant, big-headed, rude... and just plain annoying. If I'd been on that ship, forget a lump hammer. It would have been several million volts of direct current shoved down it's bread slots!

I think maybe Hoagey. I liked that episode a lot, and I did like the character, and the running gag but I think his stuff could get old fast. At least if he continued down that vein.

I would like to see him again, though. Just in the right way and in the right circumstances.

Just thought of another. Kill Crazy.

Although I'm breaking the thread rules now, as the title says single most irritating, and I've already named mine.

I think half the characters from series 8 could be described as irritating - all those minor and support characters from the guys watching the basketball game (doing a dismally unfunny half-hearted Mexican wave) to Killcrazy, the Data Doctor (Robert Llewellyn's worst moment) and the psychiatric counsellor. Of all the series 8 characters though, it's Birdman that stands out for me as the most irritating character of all time. Perhaps even worse though was that I often found the main characters irritating in series 8, which just goes to show how bad the characterisation was at this point.

Kryten in series 7 deserves a special mention for being particularly annoying (and completely different to how the character acted previously) with his jealous, whiny act.

Is he the slightly effeminate, one-eyed warden? I like him :-)

Just thought of yet another. Claire Grogan's Kochanski. She's easy enough on the eye, but the way she's constantly grinning, regardless of the scene's mood, kind of annoys me. Like when Rimmer's squeezing past her on the dance floor during Lister's flashback, and flings her handbag away.

Oh, and how can I forget Hayridge's Holly?

I once saw a thread on a Friends forum, where all the main and recurring characters were listed and members had to vote on who to throw out until they got down to the winner (I think Chandler won).

I should have done that with this thread.

I forgot about the Medi doctor. Yes he probably beats Hoagy, who does have an endearing likeable side.

Arlene Rimmer and Deb Lister are in my opinion the most irritating female characters ever seen in Red Dwarf, and they're a good part of the reason why Parallel Universe is one of my least favourite episodes. Part of it is to do with the writing, while part of it is due to a poor performance by one of the two actresses.

Suzanne Bertish, who plays Arlene, is just too wooden in the role and seems to be capable of only one facial expression. Deb Lister on the other hand is too unsubtle and annoyingly boisterous - and ultimately very different from our Lister.

Although he's only on there very briefly, I find Robert Llewelyn's Data Doctor to be the most annoying, even more so than Kerry Shale's Medibot.

I don't understand the anti- feelings towards Hattie's Holly to be honest, I'd put her above Norman Lovett's Holly in Series VIII personally, I think she does a pretty good job of playing a dim-witted AI computer myself.
