1st point - I agree.
2nd point - I do not agree.
I disagree, Series VI and X worked just fine without either Holly, whilst I thought VII was weaker that had nothing to do with a lack of Holly and VIII was poor in spite of a return of Norman Lovett's Holly. All just IMO of course.
i agree that the show can survive without holly and that holly was wasted in series 8 and wasn't very funny but its not the humor i am talking about its more the characters role in the show and the novel which i know holly slowly got pushed out in both but he/she is a core component of what started this show in the first place
Arguabley my most popular thread!! If only the same response was gained on the smeg out's one
Maybe a core component of the original cast (Of which Kryten wasn't for two series let's not forget), but disregarding Norman's mostly forgettable and poor reprisal of the role in VIII, in which he was basically a minor ancillary character with about the same screen time or less than Hollister, Holly hasn't been part of Red Dwarf for around half it's run and was really just a supporting character for more than half of that anyway.
I think if Holly is brought back in some form, it's got to be with a bit more of a purpose than just because he/she was in it at the start 25 years ago. If not, we'll probably just end up with more moon impressions and rover-ectomy type jokes...
Important things come first
Lies and deceit are important!!! I find them hard to ignore unlike some! :x
To be honest, Holly was more of a funny character, and not a perfunctory one, up to and including series III. By series IV, Kryten had largely taken over the "explaining the technical stuff" role and Holly started to become a lot less funny as a result (with notable exceptions, i.e. White Hole).
Series V definitely shows a distinct lack of Holly, and series VI works very well without the character. Conversely, series VII and VIII don't work so well, with or without Holly, and the same for BTE and series X.
I would love Holly to return, but that being said, the character needs to be there as a character and not a machine, if you know what I mean. Ideally, an episode based around Holly might be useful.
So, look out for stuff next week (methinks ticket announcement).
Don't you dare do anything for Tuesday, I've got a business meeting and can't be avidly checking the internet every 30 minutes when I'm supposed to be working (not that I do that anyway...)!
I think one of the special announcements is the ticket release date, the other is a competition for some cool RD prizes or perhaps a chance to be an extra on an episode or something really special.
Also, I've said it before and I'll say it again. Holly isn't worth bringing back just for the sake of nostalgia etc. but if they wanted to fully put the character to rest, one episode where Holly comes back and then gets a proper ending would work really well I feel. Especially if Norman and Hattie both got to come back in the role, perhaps as differing personalities who try to take over control of RD, inadvertently endangering the crews lives so they have to turn Holly off permanently or something to survive.
Oh here we go again!!!!!! :x:x
I've entered the competition, best of luck to everyone else who has.
You'll need it if it's as shambolic as the Smeg Outs one!!!
Why wish others luck? Don't you want to win?
What's this about Kill Crazy returning? Was it just a joke?
As much as I like Kill Crazy, he was a staple of series 8. Bringing him back wouldn't feel right.
Nothing from s8 coming back would "feel right"
