I'm confused. Are the bots on here spam bots, that are not wanted, if so why are they listed?

Or have they purposefully being put there for some reason by the moderators?

No, they're not actual accounts. They're not-logged-in-users that are viewing the forum, much the same way as if you came to the forum without logging in - it's just that rather than being people at computers, they are algorithms on servers that visit sites and capture data. But there is - I presume! - something in the forum software that can identify when a visitor is a bot/crawler rather than a real person, I guess down to patterns of behaviour. It's like when you fill out a form online and a CAPTCHA gets you to prove you're not a robot. If that didn't exist, then instead of saying "Guests: 2, Robots: 6" it would just say "Guests: 8".

They're not put there by us. They're just a thing that exists on the internet and a consequence of using it.

    Good explanation, @Seb.

They will mostly be things like "Googlebot" and "Bingbot". These are the mechanisms by which these search engines read a website's content and index it so that it can be found by people searching for stuff in their search engine.

A perfect example, this search query:
    https://www.google.co.uk/search?q="What's a Robot? don't be funny i'm serious ..."

...should find this very thread. If these robots weren't visiting and reading (or "crawling") this forum, then searching for the above on Google likely wouldn't find anything at all.

So do bots look at individual threads,o t just the front page, or purely visitor details, or something else?

There is a definite irony that @yoserian uses a quote form the insane robot friend of Kryten in his signature!!!

Bots are web crawlers. They have different uses depending on whose bot it is , they don't interact with a site just come in and look around. The Internet Archives bot is why you can go there and see old snaps of ...... well here for instance.

    https://web.archive.org/web/*/www.reddwarf.co.uk

To repeat, they do not interact with a site just "look".
