What's wrong with Series VII and VIII?

I think the GELF stuff is excellent. Even the fact that that one of them was played by Ainsley bloody Harriott doesn't mar it for me. The village is probably my second favourite Red Dwarf location after the town in Gunmen. The second half, with the introduction of Ace and Dwayne, could so easily have been a disaster of the Dibbley Family kind, but it just manages to work. It's good fun and ends with a line I've since adopted for whenever I make a stupid mess-up, "What a Dibbley!"

Nah, I disagree on the GELF stuff. I found it tedious, at best. I mean, what the hell are these things? To coin a RD phrase, "Who created them? And what was their mission? To rid the universe of single men?" Aside from the inclusion of the GELFs, the episode starts exactly the same way as every other episode in S6 by following the formula: crew lazing around Starbug, Cat smells something, Cat declares they'll soon be deader than some piece of out-of-fashion clothing, Starbug is attacked/crashes/sucked into a space anomaly or any combination of these events, crew must attempt repairs and/or to rectify the situation while remaining in mortal danger. Yawn.

The funniest GELF moment in the entire series was actually in S7 in Ouroboros when we were first introduced to alternate Kochanski and they were trying to invade nonspace to get at Lister. They faxed (yes, faxed) over a photo of the "bride" and Kryten goes on the long tirade over his headset in that ridiculous GELF language. It's a perfectly executed scene that has me rolling every single time. I guess in a weird way I have Polymorph II to thank for it, since without that episode, this scene would haven ever existed.

I don't get it.. I love series VII & VIII ... Series VII is great because even though Rimmer is not there as much as I would like to, I was really happy for having Kochanski there. I've always hoped she & Lister would be a couple :-) And I love series VIII - Rimmer was back & the whole crew was working just great together.. for me Red Dwarf is not just those 4 guys + Holly.. for me Red Dwarf is Lister, Rimmer, Cat, Kryten & KOCHANSKI :-)

In general I'm quite happy with S8. Watching the Xtended cut of Pete. Enjoying it but I'm not a fan of how they lose the timewand as soon as the T-Rex is formed. Like I know it's a plot device but they could've lost the time wand in a less smeggy way.

I don't like the way they leave it in the Captain's office, when they clearly had it as they were about to leave. It's as though it was written in just to allow the joke of Rimmer insulting the Captain who was standing behind him, which is an old joke but has probably never been done better, but I'm sure they could have devised another reason the Captain would be there.

I don't really think it's fair to "oh dear" someone just because they have a different sense of humour or preference (i.e. they disagree with your opinion). I personally disagree with her, but there's no reason to feel superior or belittle someone because the majority share your opinion.

EDIT: Apologies if I sound pretentious and really not intending to troll! Just don't think it's very fair. :-D

No, it's not fair, but it's Simulant's way, and you get used to it. For ages I thought he was a troll, but I think it's just the way he is. But your reaction is understandable.

PS I still think Simulant might be female.:-D

I prefered it when they never had been a couple in the first place. To me, I felt that was what Kochanski was and should have remained to Lister, that what-if...? regretted relationship that never was if only you'd had the bottle to just go and ask that person out that I think most of us have in out past somewhere.

As for Series VIII, I didn't think the interaction between the Starbug crew and the Red Dwarf crew was that good at all. A lot of the jokes relied on a slapstick* type humour that just didn't appeal to me at all, such as putting the JMC branded viagra in the guard's drinks or the ridiculous scene where Lister and Rimmer get their delayed beating, that still makes me cringe watching it. That said there's still enough positives there to make it worth watching IMO, but more negatives than in the other series.

    * I think this is the right type, I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong though...

I don't regret it for completion sake, and the fact there was 1 episode I liked but series 8 IMO was pretty horrible and I could only imagine how much you would hated it. I despised it myself and I tend to be somewhat more forgiving.

You are not a nice person. Anonymity on the internet must be a Godsend.

That's great Lucy - don't let anyone make you enjoy Red Dwarf less. I enjoy S7/8 for what it is, not hating it for what I want it to be. Both seasons aren't without merit.

Both 'season' and 'series' are acceptable.

I've also noticed that Rob and Doug tend to use 'season'.
