Does Lister want to find? The one from the alternative dimension who loves Hologram Lister or the one from his dimension who died in the radiation leak? Obviously the latter would involve some time travel or resurrecting her as a hologram.

This has just occurred to me after watching Ouroboros.

Maybe both? He still has a time travel incident that hasn't happened for them yet when he's meant to marry her. After the later seasons I think it's the Kristine from the other dimension since that is the one he's spent the most time with.

I thought for a while now that a good way to resolve this would be for Lister and co to finally catch up with Kochanski only to find that she has found a way to return to her own dimension...an initially depressed Lister starts to give up and begins to really let himself go. He stops shaving and grows out a full beard. To try and lecture him on good grooming, Rimmer grows what he thinks to be a gentlemanly (although patently ridiculous) mustache....maybe you can see where this is heading.

You'd think he'd have gotten over it by now. His obsession is bordering on psychosis.

Just realised that's what Rimmer would say.

Especially considering that the alt universe Kochanski he's currently after is literally his mum! That's another reason I don't want him to end up with that one!

Exactly, i actually hate the whole is his own dad bit......and kochanski is his mum. Just like sometimes not seeing a baddie is scarier than seeing the baddie, i dont think this helps any situation but does make it wierd. Leaving it us an unkown would not have hurt the series

Interestingly, before a certain cat mewed/didn't mew, both Kochanskis were one and the same, if I understand my branching parallel universes correctly. So both are his mum, in a sense. But I know what you mean. I think from now on, Lister's heart is set on parallel Kochanski. Whether or not that's the one he ends up with (if he ever does) is another thing.

Her being his mum is rather weird though. I think he would see it in terms of their relationship, I.e she was his girlfriend, and she was never a mum to him in terms of bringing him up (well, apart for the first few months before he got left under the pool table). But it is a bit icky from a genetic POV.

My personal theory is that the future Lister who married Kochanski is the one from Out of Time.

In Stasis Leak, Lister is told: "In five years' time, you find another way to come back in time." That sounds about right for the discovery of the time drive. So, I like to think he married Kochanski when he was jetting around history, "enjoying the very best time has to offer" (Out of Time).

In that case, Lister wouldn't expect to marry Kochanski now - any more than he'd expect to "socialise with all of the greatest figures in history - the Hapsburgs, the Borgias," etc.. That future timeline has been undone.

I'm guessing it's the other dimension Kochanski - simply because, as far as he knows, she's alive and at large in his current time zone.

Also, from his point of view, they're more or less identical. It's only us who sees two different actresses.

That's a really good theory =D It does match up with the timing perfectly.

That's a great theory. The future Lister and Rimmer in Stasis Leak do look like they could be on their way to play mixed doubles with the Goerrings in their future, they're already throwing money around in swanky hotels but their corruption is obviously in its early stages. That would be a great way to hand wave that timeline.

It looks like the future in Future Echoes is more likely now - the one where Lister appears with a robot arm in his bunk.

Thank you for this idea. I can accept this a the story to cover that huge plot hole.

I had forgotten this nonsense as well as some other oddities of RDVII.....

Yep. That is what the episode ouroboros is all about. I bet if Rimmer was around during series seven he'd never let Lister forget that fact.

I assumed he was trying to find the Kochanski from the alternative dimension, since she's still alive somewhere as far as he knows. We know that original Kochanski's mind/hologram is still on file in Red Dwarf - in Holoship they interviewed dead crew members to replace Rimmer as ship's hologram (but for some reason didn't think to interview Kochasnki?). Presumably the only thing stopping Lister bringing original Kochanski back as a hologram is the fact that the ship can only sustain one hologram.

Ignoring the recasting, another theory is when trapped dimension hopping at the end of series 8 they stumble across Kockanski's universe, were she elects to stay with her Lister.

After things return to normal, Holly reminds a depressed Lister of the events of Stasis Leak and the crew travels into the past to bring her back. Lister said its been "5 years" for him, give or take stasis in "Back in the Red" so the timing fits.

I'm assuming that the reason they never interview Kochanski's hologram is that after Me2 Rimmer could not remember where he hid Kochanski's disc and that it's lost somewhere.
