Which Rimmer?

Do you prefer to think RDX+ Rimmer is...

  1. A new, post-nano hologram of Rimmer?

  2. The original hologram from RDI-VII, who's stopped being Ace and was reunited with the crew?

That would certainly confuse Chris :-) He says he always plays the part as the original Rimmer :nod:

I think nano-Rimmer died at the end of VIII, and IX+ Rimmer is a new Rimmer with old Rimmer's memories programmed in. If this Rimmer had heroic space-adventures as Ace Rimmer, then surely someone would have commented on it, and what happened to him to turn him back into a weasel. Mind you, maybe Ace-Rimmer-Rimmer turned up at the end of VIII and saved them all from the virus, and somehow got merged with weasel nano-Rimmer in a weird timey paradoxy thing. And maybe they did mention it in the nine years we weren't watching them.

I'm going with it's original Rimmer. He tried to be Ace, failed instantly, and passed the job on to another Rimmer who could do it. Then came back to our dimension and saved the Dwarfers at the end of Series VIII (via fluke). That's why he can remember all the stuff pre-series VIII. He's the same Rimmer.

This is exactly the interpretation I resist. If Rimmer failed at being Ace, and came back with his tail between his legs, then all the emotional impact of Stoke Me a Clipper is lost :-(

Course it isn't, it's real, then stuff happened. Is 'Thanks for the memory' less emotional cos it weren't his dad anyway?

Conspiracy theory: The letter in TftM was actually talking about Dungo.

But it explains to me why he's still a weasel. Then he finally gets his moment in The Beginning.

    He is original Rimmer, because:
    1) He has memories to old series, but he never mentions anything from VIII except the end.
    2) He has some kind of imunity against despair squid - he can choose betwen realities.
    3) He is hard light hologram and Dwarfers haven't discovered this technology.

Hadn't considered this. Legion upgraded Rimmer to hardlight by fiddling with his lightbee. That lightbee then left with original Rimmer. If there are spare lightbees lying around Red Dwarf, they would be softlight.

I woudn't be surprised if original Rimmer was forced to stop being Ace due to health problems (aka glitches with his lightbee.) We already know that he was running a high T count before he left as Ace and doesn't seem to be as industructable as he was supposed to be.

In my personal headcanon the Rimmer built by the nanobots isn't Ace but is somewhere with Kochanski.

The creators of the series acknowledge that Rimmer's surname comes from a snobby prefect with whom they attended school. They claim, however, that only the boy's name was used, and not his personality because that would imply he had one.

Wrong, I still have the personality more than 40 years on :-)

Hi, welcome to the forum, are you saying you're the Rimmer in question?

    Wrong.
Yes actually. I wrote to Doug and Rob many years ago and they sent me a rather nervous letter obviously vetted by a lawyer and enclosed one of their books. I am cool about the whole thing. Have dined out on it many times. My first and current wife agree that Rimmer is me! Had our gardener trimming the lawn edges today with nail clippers. Well OK on his hands and knees with small shears.

Just watching the original episodes which is what brought me here. Forgotten all about it to be honest. Excellent script writing. I also wrote notes on my arms when taking my ATPL navigation exams. Scary that the guys would predict that.
