The original Rimmer now lives in Africa.
This is incredible feeling, talking with Mr. Rimmer. Can I ask how were Grant&Naylor at school (not grades, but behavior)?
Sorry if I'm annoying with these questions, but this is very interesting for me.
@Rimmer Chets Is this for real or are you pranking us?
Why did you hyperlink the words "creators", "surname" and "prefect" to their respective wikipedia articles?
That's a quote from Wikipedia that he copied/pasted into his post, before adding his own comment. The hyperlinks are in the source.
I smell a big ole "p" coming on ..............
Well I'M certainly not cleaning it up!
Hologram Rimmer was just a computer simulation remember, he's an AI, so while 1-7 Rimmer was one copy that became independent, this new Rimmer is just another exact copy of the Rimmer that left. That way, the original Rimmer hologram gets his happy hero ending and became Ace, and is still trekking the multiverse, while this new Rimmer isn't a tragic failure who couldn't cut it as Ace and wasn't made to return to the crew with his tail between his legs. Current Rimmer is just a duplicate of the Rimmer that left, same experiences, same personality, same character arc of original Holo Rimmer, but the only difference is that he never left to be Ace and has no memory of the time Ace returned to recruit the other Rimmer, but he also has the memory of what happened to Nano-Rimmer during Series 8 plugged into his memory. He's a hologram, as we know from Thanks For The Memory he can be programmed to have whatever memories are available in the hologram projection suite.
I like it this way, and I think Lister would try to make it this way, to be kind to Rimmer and keep all his experiences with him intact with a custom hologram, so I'm sticking with it. He's a copy, but he is still classic Rimmer. He's whatever Lister needs him to be.
This is my preferred interpretation.
Pretty good idea! I genuinely never thought of that.
Here's an explanation for what happened after the end of series 8, that I just thought of...I'm unsure if anyone else has had the same idea, or if theres any reason why this idea wouldn't work or be possible... but here it is.
Rimmer dies. The virus eating the ship doesn't get cured, and it eats the ship. In the cold vacuum of space, the virus dies. Then, the nanites return and rebuild the ship again but to what it looks like now, and included inside is the copied personality of Rimmer, but with the memories of series 1-6, (maybe the nanites managed to merge in the memories from series 8 as well?). The crew come back aboard, and load Rimmer's hologram who now has all his memories intact.
So Lister has his choice of new hologram, and he chooses another Rimmer? Why not Petersen?
It wouldnt shock me if Rimmer is the only member of the entire crew who’d be prepared to come back to what is effectively an empty, miserable eternal existence.
They sort of semi covered that back in holoship.
Because he loves Rimmer more than life itself.
doesn't work because they say in "The Beginning" they explain the virus *almost* destroyed Red Dwarf, and that Rimmer saved everyone- your explanation doesn't really fit into that lol
Because Holly is still about and controlling the holograms.
