Surely William would be the parallel? The objection wasn't towards surnames.
It's a preference thing. Andrew doesn't like being called Andy*. That's fair enough and should be respected.
*Except by Mr. Flibble in some of the interviews, but then their relationship is rather more -ahem- intimate. ops:
Perhaps he should have explained that then, instead of talking down to me again. All I seem to have done for the last few days is defend myself againsts the man. I'd like to put an offical end to the silly bickering here and now and get on with what I joined up here for in the first place, which was to talk about RD.
Common it is, but that doesn't mean everyone uses it. I wouldn't call you 'Will'.
And the difference being, Andrew, that if you did call me Will and it was a name I didn't like, I'd have never dreamed of saying so in the condescending manner you adopted.
Isn't that 'cos he appears to be named after the Kes character, though
(I have a friend, incidentally, whose name is Daniel and who loathes being called "Dan". So I know what you mean about not liking the automatic assumption that you'll want to use the shortened version)
