Grab a sneaky look behind the scenes of Red Dwarf XII.
26 February, 2016
You know, it does feel rather slightly like torture letting the cast and crew of Red Dwarf post little teasery updates during the filming of Series XII. After all, it's bad enough that we've got to wait until later this year to see Series XI - but by dangling imagery from the Red Dwarf XII filming in front of you, we're doing so in the knowledge that you've got to wait until some point in 2017 to see the episodes. 2017! That's ages away! People have put themselves into stasis for less.
But at the same time, who doesn't want to see as much as they can of the detail littered around the show's set, as early as they can? Exactly. So that's why we're bringing you this roundup of tidbits from the last couple of weeks of social media and itchy phone-camera-trigger-fingers...
First up, courtesy of producer Richard Naylor, is a glimpse at something we don't often get to see even after the shows have been broadcast - a storyboard! This one's from a scene that will ultimately be shot with models for the third episode recorded during the Series XII block, but which was shown in this form to the audience during the live filming:
Obviously we can't say anything about what's actually happening in this scene, but it does give away the all-important spoilery detail that at least one of the new episodes might have Starbug in it.
Richard also gave us a pretty excellent photo of something we've never seen on the Dwarf before - a payphone! It's a lovely glimpse into the sheer level of detail put into the show by the production design department, even though plenty of what you can see here might never actually make it on screen for very long, if at all:
No, we don't know who "HOT TANYA" is either. Nor do we have her number.
Meanwhile, Craig Charles seems to have thrown himself into Twitter with gusto now that he's taken over his old Funk & Soul Show account - and he's even starting to put Robert Llewellyn and Danny John-Jules to shame when it comes to sneakily Tweeting from the set. Here, he gave away the fact that he was lounging around in both Lister and Rimmer's bunks between takes:

While there's much about the look of Series XI and XII that's brand new - even down to that orange walled background - we find something very comforting in these nods to the show's past; and in the idea that almost thirty years into their space odyssey, Lister and Rimmer still decorate their bunks with exactly the same sort of stuff they did in their earliest days.
The same goes, in fact, for this distinctly retro-looking JMC logo:

And a new creation from the art department, but one that's very much rooted in the styling and imagery of classic episodes - a Zero G Football video!

Of course, as always, you'll have to wait a fair while to find out exactly how this kind of thing plays into the episodes - but it's fun to speculate in the meantime. It's hard to believe that we're already ten episodes in to this twelve episode run - with just tonight's and next week's live recording to go before the lengthy post-production process begins. But after that, the fun can really start...
Red Dwarf XI and XII will air on Dave in 2016 and 2017!
