The writing, the cast were at their peak.
Production a little off but I think you are right.

I see the “fans” are voting series I as the best. Ya know, cos everyone watched it when it first aired :roll:

The poll is an eyesore really, obviously Red Dwarf was at its peak from around IV-VI, but the fanbase has a tendency to just fling everything Red Dwarf post-1993 out of the window. 1% for series X? Stupid.

For what it's worth I voted for season VI, which contains some of my my all time favourite episodes such as Gunmen of the Apocalypse, Legion and Out of Time. When I voted I noticed, as I predicted, season V is winning with VI in second place.

Because other than Marooned, bits of Timeslides and bits of Polymorph it’s a pretty poor series that’s all over the place!!!

I was never much of a season III fan - even though it's the season that introduced me to Red Dwarf. Marooned will always be on of the greatest Dwarf episodes, but I never thought much of the rest. I don't even like Polymorph.

I think Backwards, Timeslides and The Last Day are good episodes, Marooned too, but I don't really see, what people find so great on Polymorph. Yes, the comedy between the changed characters is great, but the episode as a whole doesn't work very well.

Backwards was the first episode I ever watched and I loved it at the time, but these days I just see it as a not very good episode full of gimmicky (and dated) special effects. I'm not fond of the others either (apart from the brilliant Marooned) and would place all the five non-Marooned episodes in my all time bottom 20.

Well back in 2002 they did a poll for the Fanclub magazine and Series 8, which was only a few years old at that time was rated quite high next to series 5. think it came 3rd place... series 8 has gone down in popularity ever since.

So personally id have expected the opposite. the latest series being so fresh in people's minds that it would have been rated higher.

I think the writing for III-VI is great, but I don’t think the production for III and IV was all that good.

I have a list with my rating out of ten for every episode. Going by the average score per season my current ranking is:

    6
    5
    11
    7
    4
    12
    9
    10
    1
    3
    2
    8

11 and 12 are probably artificially high right now. I have a tendency to downgrade episodes over time and I expect they'll go down with a rewatch or two. I also fear that I've become over familiar with seasons 1 and 2 and that's why they're both so low down.
