The reviews are in for the Series VIII DVD.
5 May, 2006
With the DVD now hitting shelves in America and already selling like hot curry in Britain and Australia, it's time for our traditional skim over the DVD reviews.
Odd to note that, despite excellent sales in the first weeks (helped, no doubt, by the marvellous skutter box set), a lot of DVD websites have missed the chance to review this final series release. The vibe seems to be that the quality of the DVDs can, at this point, be taken for granted... which is utterly amazing, if a little short on feedback-providing.
Still, here's how it all shook out. Oh, and once again make sure you stay with us to the end of this article - the Easter Eggs are detailed at the bottom of the page, and have now been added alongside the others in the FAQ.
Magazines
SFX
Extras: "Another superb package - and not just in terms of quantity. The documentaries are slickly produced and feature some surprisingly frank views, [and] the cut scenes and bloopers are enormous fun."
Extras: 5/5
Ultimate DVD
Show: "The resetting of the show's clock affords the series a fresh yet gratifyingly familiar feel... returning them to the great writing and sparring that made the series such a success in the first place."

DVD Review
Extras: "Extra-expectant after Series VII's wedge of bonus features, the Beeb doesn't let us down." [Actually, that would be Grant Naylor and 2 entertain. But we're happy to please.]
Extras: 5/5
Starburst
Show: "Red Dwarf VIII succeeds because it takes risks; the show remains committed to visual spectacle, but Naylor finds inventive ways to marry that with humour... Best of all, the series finds its heart once more... It may be the final series, but at least Red Dwarf went out on a high."
Extras: 5/5
TV Zone
Overall: "A fantastic package and a season well worth revisiting."
Overall: 8/10
GQ
Show: "The most underrated British comedy of the past 20 years... This final series bows out in some style, while still keeping follow-up options open."
Sight & Sound
Show: "The trademark zaniness and deft science-fiction plotting are well in evidence."
Websites
Ain't It Cool News, Moriarty
Overall: "Every season is overstuffed with extra features and bonus scenes and gag reels and commentaries. They are pretty much as great as any fan of any show would want, sort of a model to compare against other TV series on disc."
White Hole
Overall: "You know it's going to be fantastic and you know what to expect... Thank you to Grant Naylor Productions and BBC Worldwide/ 2 entertain for producing these exceptional discs."
The Tank: "The jewel in the crown... a brilliant record of the series from all manner of angles."
Ganymede & Titan
Commentaries: [On Norman Lovett's moaning] "Kudos to GNP for not editing the whining old git out."
Overall: What [GNP] produce are pretty much the best DVDs out there, full stop... you just know they've gone down pretty much every avenue to get as much material as possible."
Captain Darling
The former fan-film commentator made his views known on the Webboard...
The Tank: "As always the original documentaries are my first port of call and this one, in my view, beats the lot... This is going to be my favourite all-time feature."
Series VIII Easter Eggs
Interesting to note that Red Dwarf Easter Eggs hold positions 1, 2, 3 and 6 in the top ten reader-voted egg poll on eeggs.com. So it was worth hiding them!
Clear Video
Disc 2: From the main menu, scroll down to Subtitles and then press right to highlight the elevator buttons. Press 'down' 12 times, until you reach button number 13, then hit 'select'. You'll be taken to a briefcase on Floor 13 containing the luck and sexual magnetism viruses.
Select the (blue) luck virus and - bad luck! - the test tube breaks and the fluid leaks away. You'll be returned to the main menu.
Select the (red) magnetism virus and you'll be shown a video for 'Clear' by now-defunct band Intro2. The video features Craig Charles, Norman Lovett and Danny John-Jules.
Interview Outtakes
Disc 3: Highlight Bonus Material on the main menu and hit 'select'. When the camera swings around to view the (closed) elevator doors, hit 'up' twice. A button will light up to the side of the door. Hit 'Select' to push it and the doors will open, revealing a skutter having some trouble with a faulty gangway.
After learning the skutter's fate, you'll be shown a series of outtakes from the Series VII and VIII DVD interviews... mostly involving people's inability to switch off their mobile phones.
Series VIII is available now in Regions 1, 2 and 4.
