What are the Dwarfers hoping to find under the tree this year?

27 November, 2015

You might not think Christmas is a particularly exciting time aboard Red Dwarf - and aside from that time with the pan-dimensional liquid beast from the Mogadon Cluster, you'd probably be right. But that doesn't mean our favourite motley crew don't celebrate the holiday at all - so with just under a month to go until the big day, we thought we'd take a sneak peak at which bits of Red Dwarf-related merchandise and media we reckon the guys would like to find in their stockings.

And who knows, it might even give you some ideas for your own wishlists or last-minute family shopping...

All prices correct at the time of writing!

Rimmer

As we all know, Arnie J loves a bargain - or, to put it another way, he's a tight-fisted goit. So naturally, he'd appreciate the tremendous value on display when it comes to the Red Dwarf DVD sets - especially as he needs something new to watch ever since Pree deleted all those episodes of Victory South...

Every series is still available in its original, extras-laden two- and three-disc form, and in each case you can pick up a brand new copy for well under a tenner. That even goes for the Blu-ray editions of Back to Earth and Red Dwarf X, as well as their lower-resolution (but still packed with extras) DVD equivalents. And if you're more in the mood for a vanilla trip through just the episodes themselves? Well, the Just the Shows boxset, featuring all 52 episodes from Series I-VIII, is the most value-packed edition of the lot, now clocking in at under twenty quid. Browse the full list of available DVDs in our region-by-region guide!

Also on the list: Puncture repair kit; New set of Armée du Nord figures; Coloured pencils (for making revision timetables); Year's subscription to Fascist Dictator Monthly.

Lister

"I've never read... a book!" Lister famously once declared. So what better place to start than with the Red Dwarf novels?

The bestselling Omnibus edition, collecting the first two books Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers and Better than Life along with a healthy chunk of bonus material, is still in print and available. Then you can move straight on to the twin sequels: Doug Naylor's Last Human and Rob Grant's Backwards. If you want to find out more about the goings-on behind the scenes of the show, meanwhile, then there's plenty to delve into in Robert Llewellyn's updated Man in the Rubber Mask memoir.

And if, like Lister, the idea of actually looking at words on a page doesn't appeal? Well, head on over to Laughing Stock or Audible and get yourself the audiobook versions instead...

As well as their UK editions, the Red Dwarf books are available in an assortment of international translations too. Check out our extensive books database to find out what's available where you are!

Also on the list: Six pack of wicked-strength Leopard Lager; Alka-Seltzer; "Best Dad in the Universe" mug (bought by himself for himself); Replacement guitar (must be an authentic Les Paul copy).

Cat

The Cat is, of course, a creature of style above all else. And what could be more stylish and cool than a classic Red Dwarf t-shirt? Okay, he might well think it's the sort of thing Duane Dibbley would be more likely to wear, but we know better.

Two of the classic 1990s designs have been reissued recently by The Stamp Centre, and you can get one or both from their website in a variety of sizes

Also on the list: Mirror; fish; shiny thing; an actual living breathing woman.

Kryten

Kryten might not be at the exact cutting edge of futuristic droid technology, but he's still pretty advanced as far as we're concerned. So he's no doubt aware that physical media is increasingly a thing of the past, and anyone with their technological head screwed on properly likes to consume their films and TV shows digitally instead.

If you agree with him, or know someone who does, then why not check out Red Dwarf on iTunes? Yes, Christmas presents don't need to come wrapped under the tree any more: you can surprise someone with a downloadable set of their favourite Red Dwarf episodes (or indeed all of 'em) by using the "Gift" options available on Apple's digital media store. It might not be very traditional, but hey, it's still better than a lump of coal. Check out the Red Dwarf iTunes room right here!
