Kerry's New Job

Red Dwarf producer moves on up to UKTV - plus some other recent alumni successes!

9 February, 2018

We're always pleased to see our Red Dwarf alumni doing well elsewhere in telly and beyond - so we've been particularly delighted this week with the announcement that Kerry Waddell has been appointed head of production at Dave's parent company UKTV.

Kerry Waddell

Kerry has a long association with Red Dwarf, having worked as Stage Manager on Series IV and V, then Production Manager on Series VI. She then went off to make a phenomenal success of herself in the TV world, ending up as head of production at Baby Cow Productions - which brought her back on to Red Dwarf as Producer of Series XI and XII alongside Richard Naylor. Of course, with her new job seeing her in charge at the broadcaster responsible for commissioning the latest episodes of the show, we hope her fruitful history with Red Dwarf will continue long into the future, and we wish her every success!

Elsewhere in Dwarf crew news, you may have seen script editor Andrew Ellard's name popping up in the credits of a few things over the past year. The recent third and final run of BBC Four's critically acclaimed Detectorists featured his handiwork, as did last year's second series of E4's Chewing Gum, which also made a successful transition to Netflix in the US, and BBC2's radio adaptation Count Arthur Strong. All three shows are well worth tracking down and checking out if you haven't seen them already.

If you're keen to see a recent Red Dwarf guest star on stage, then you'll want to check out the upcoming production of Frankenstein at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester. Series XII's very own Hitler, Ryan Gage, is switching military uniforms to play the story's point-of-view character, Captain Robert Walton. The show runs from 9th March to 14th April - but the squeamish should be warned that the show "is a dark psychological thriller which contains violence, including on-stage depictions of murder, gore and dismembered body parts".

And if you like the cinematography on Dwarf but you're also a fan of scenic crime dramas, then you can get a two-for-one with the recently-completed eighth series of Vera on ITV, and the upcoming fourth series of BBC Scotland's Shetland - as both feature the work of our very own director of photography Ed Moore. Plus, it would of course be remiss of us not to remind you that the seventh series of Death in Paradise, featuring one Danny John Jules, is still running on BBC One on Thursday nights and available to catch up with on iPlayer.

And finally, while we often have to fend off questions on Twitter from fans wondering if there'll ever be Red Dwarf Funko Pop action figures, we can at least tell you that there's one Dwarf actor who's getting a character turned into one: Mercy, from the popular videogame Overwatch, as voiced by Series XI's Lucie Pohl. Will it be the last? Well, at the rate Funko go, they'll surely get around to Death in Paradise sooner or later...

Keep up with the latest Red Dwarf cast and crew happenings on Twitter and over on our Forum!
